Went brush hogging at a friends place and noticed the fan belt was very lose. No it did not overheat, but it needs to be replaced. Trying to move the dynamo, Found it hit the oil filter before it would tighten up the belt. Hit the dynamo bolts with PB Blaster, and having a hard time moving it in and out. But as the repair goes on, noticed coolant dripping onto the front axle.

Looks like I'm pulling the Rad, and dealing with hoses that have been on for over 35 years. And also trying to find an old school rad shop as well.

Will keep posted on repairs.

I would locate the leak before getting all crazy.

While a tight belt is best, reasonably snug will be 'good enough' on these because there is so little load on the belt. Or if the hoses have to come off anyway, then its time to replace the belt. Don't bother trying to adjust the dynamo beyond its reasonable adjustment range.

Hoses go bad from the inside out. If the hose is soft to the grip when cool, the hose has weakened inside.

As for the rad, Hoye, Fredricks and other places on the net have them new. Or the reman shops to redo the existing one.

#1 rule with a cooling system, either use the pre-mix 50/50 GREEN stuff (never longlife for our tractors) or the green stuff with distilled water mixed to 50/50.

Tap water will and can cause corrosion in less than 6 months in a cooling system.

I think I will pour some ground pepper in the rad, and take as much slack out of the fan belt until better weather comes around.

That would work for the short term. The pepper will fill in any small pin-holes without an issue. About two table spoons should do the trick. If you can grind it yourself, do it with flakes in a coffee burr grinder for best results.

If you can't find the belt locally, there is a site that has name brand belts at dirt cheap prices in the various grades. Vbeltsupply.com They have been doing belts for decades to the Ag business in the mid-west. The local places in my area wanted $45 for my JD261 rear mower B-147 belt. I got it for $13+ shipping. Saved about $22.

That's great. It's hard to find a recore or rebuilt radiator shop these days.

You may what to post the company here for others out in WA state to take advantage. :)
