Looking at 2 purchases coming up for the land we duck hunt
1 tractor
2 pto trailer pump

After looking at the performance charts of all models, we are interested in a 12" pump
specs: 60hp will push 5000 gpm, 31ft head, 600 rpm

My ? is would a 100hp(at pto) tractor with a 1000 pto, running at 60% run the pump efficiently. Basically run a 1000 pto tractor on a 540 pump at lower hp. Trying to save fuel and wear on the tractor.

Tractors we're looking at:
white 2-105
jd 4020
ih 966-1066
mf 492

any advice appreciated

Welcome to TbN

If pumping is the primary task, consider buying a 60 HP tractor and using it as designed. Understand that these tractors are built to run at rated speed all day long without worry. Most manufacturers recommend not running a 540 device using the 1000 RPM mode. Fuel use is more about actual work done than engine speed - a tractor under no load running at 540 PTO speed will use very little fuel compared to running with a full load.
Good luck.

why are you trying to run a much larger tractor at a lower rpm to save fuel? Wouldn't it make more sense to run a tractor with a smaller engine that is producing the pto hp that you need and run it at rated speed? JD has a nifty option to run the Economy PTO at 1700 rpm instead of the 2400 rpm standard pto engine speed. Are you planning on doing something else with the tractor that you need that size of machine?

When putting power (HP) through a gear ratio, torque multiplies; HP doesn't.
HP is the rate at which you can do a given amount of work.

What this means is that running the engine at a lower speed at a given output HP will require more torque to deliver that equivalent HP. More torque means more twisting load trying to shear something.

Also, your journal bearings like to run at the higher (rated) speed - that's where the elastohydrodynamic bearing is designed to handle high loads by the engine designers and will give you the greatest separation between moving metal surfaces at load. Separation between moving metal surfaces is what prevents/reduces journal wear.

Be kind to your journals and run at rated speed when loading up your engine.

Just trying to gather as much info as I can, being that I have never sat behind the wheel of a tractor.

We flood 60+/- acres, 12-18" deep, need the 5000 gpm volume to pump full in 4-5 days (limited water source). Other than pumping, the other jobs at hand are mowing, light disking, planting food plots, spraying etc... Not a farm operation by any means.

Thanks again

Well, it hardly seems like you need a 100hp pto tractor then. What are the attachment sizes for your other implements? It sounds like your trying to smash an ant with a sledgehammer. (Maybe exaggerating a bit) If you have a smaller mower(Under 10 feet), a light disc (again around 10') I'm not really seeing the reasoning behind a bigger tractor? It sounds like a 60-70 pto hp tractor is all you really need and will get you the fuel economy that you are looking for.

No pole barn, no tractor/implements, and no pump. We always had someone manage the duck lake for us. Trying to put together a budget to cover the costs of managing the land ourselves. It's hard not to swing for the fences while looking at all these toys.
