I am in the market for a new or decent used 4x4 tractor around 35 hp with a loader and hoe. I have not found any decent used ones so far or they are sold. Is there any place to go to checkout the new prices I have so far. Can you even play the price game like with trucks? So far the best price I have is for a Mahindra 3616 with loader and hoe with hydrostat shift is $24,500. New Holland T1520 loader hoe hydrostat is $27,800. I need to find one of the equipment trader mags and try my luck there. Any input as far as Kubota vs New Holland vs Mahindra vs Kiote?

Presume you are gettingthose prices from Mike Klem, right there in Spencer. He is pretty straight on with prices, not much haggling, but service and parts are obviously very close to you, and that is worth a lot. Heard that Mike was having to do a lot of warranty work on the Mahandrina, however.

The Tractor Supply store in Sturbridge or Leceister might have a tractor-trader magazine.

Not that I would advocate this in any way, but I have found that tractor prices are exactly 6.25% cheaper a few miles north, where you will find several reputable dealers. Haggling varies, but at least when I've done it seemed less than the games you would find on cars. Used hold their value very well and last a long time and it seems like good ones go quick. Most of the dealers have a website with used equipment and get new stuff in regularly. Dealers I'd check out (I'm in the same area): chappell tractor NH (kubota, new holland, very big operation), toreku tractor (kubota, small in MA), MB Tractor (kubota, others?), padula brothers (john deere, used other brands) and there's probably a few more. Tractorhouse.com also is a good place to find private sales and to get price comps.

I bought my Mahindra 8560 from orchard hill farm equipment in Belchertown Ma. He offered the most agressive pricing and has a fair amount of inventory for you to check out. He's been in business for quite some time for continued support.

Bear in mind that MA does have laws on the books that actually require you to claim [just about?] everything purchased "to the North" so that you can write the check to MA for the additional 6.25%.

One thing that I ran into when buying my Deere was that the Deere dealerships seemed to want nothing to do with underbidding each other. I got a great deal from my local dealer, but I was impatient. There was a NH dealer with my tractor on the lot (that would have saved three months of lead time for ordering), but he wanted nothing to do with competing with my local dealer simply because he had it on the lot. I suspect that it was more that he wanted nothing to do with cutting his price on an in-stock item to sell one instead of me having to wait and he knew I wouldn't accept a much higher cost just to get it "now".

No one farm-related in Mass. should be paying 6.25% sales tax on tractors or tractor parts! Ask the dealer for a sales tax exemption form, if you don't have one yourself. Anything (tractor parts, lumber, chain saws, etc, etc.)is exempt from Mass Sales Tax if Agricultural Use.

I don't see where the OP stated that it was for AG use specifically, tho...

I would think if you can't qualify as a "farm" under IRS rules, you won't get a state Ag tax exclusion either. Many years ago in Ohio, to get the state tax exclusion farmers had to supply a state-issued tax id number.

I suppose states all have their own regs. on that, but they do want to collect on out-of-state purchases here in Maine. There's a line and formula on the state tax return for that purpose.

Yup, that's why i said I would never advocate doing such a thing, or do it personally. I personally, as I'm sure everyone in MA does am very careful to report any large out of state purchases, cash income or anything else that may effect my MA state taxes.
