Hey all,

I have a NH TN70D that is making crank case oil. I suspect the fuel pump or possibly the injection pump. I am wondering if there is a way for the hydraulic oil to migrate into the crankcase. Anybody ever heard of this happening?

thanks,

Tim

I have heared of it happening. Check the level of your hydraulic fluid, see if it has gone down.

It not all that uncommon. My TC40 makes a little oil--when it feels like it--since I can't detect any pattern to it. It's been doing it for three-four years now.

I've never seen it make more than about 1/2 quart between oil changes, and sometimes it doesn't make hardly any.

I think it may be hard to detect, or be certain where a missing quart or less went, in your hydraulic reservoir unless you never change implements. The fuel injection pump is another candidate.

The Hydraulic pump is engine driven meaning that there is a seal between the two common fluids. If the seal is faulty, hydraulic oil can migrate into the crankcase. Your $29 answer is to draw some oil and send it to Blackstone Labs for an analysis. They will identify what's going into your crankcase and allow you to target your repairs.

Coolant, Glycol, is the worst to find, fuel and hydraulic oil #2 and #3 but none of them are good for your engine.

Hey all, a little up date. I let the tractor sit for several days on level ground (the same location that it was on when I determined that there was more oil in the crankcase than when I changed the oil). The oil level was back down to just above the full line. I could not see any oil on the ground that may have leaked out to the crankcase. Would Diesel fuel have evaporated out of the crankcase oil over several days?

I did order a test kit from Blackstone and will have the oil checked for contaminants, but it is going to take a few weeks.

In a closed crankcase, I don't think much diesel fuel would evaporate, at least over a few days. Could it have been a case where when you first checked the level, the filter was empty. Depending on the filter this could lower the level by almost a quart, once it fills.

You will be very happy once you get your oil report...it takes the guess work out of things and they are very good in describing the general condition of your engine internals based on what's in the oil. Knowing if you have any fluids in your oil that don't belong, or not will be of great help. Blackstone is pretty fast. They emailed me an advance copy of the report as soon as they ran the oil and mailed me a hard copy as a follow up.

Let us know what you find.

G'day on some machines I have seen the oil migrate up the dipstick tube giving you a false reading you can usually overcome this by leaving the dipstick out for 5-10 min and then checking.

I have seen this as well. Even with the engine sitting for a long time, the oil seems to stay in the dipstick tube. Take out, leave it for a bit then recheck. This is obviously on certain engines only.

Sometimes, on a hot motor the oil seems to pull up the dipstick. On certain engines, it helps to cool off the dipstick, then check the oil level. Just dip it in cool water then wipe it off and check the oil.
This is much more common on some autos. Nissan V6s, for instance. But I can see where some tractors may be similar.
