I have an old Bush Hog brand 5 ft rotary cutter that has become too small for my needs. I want to replace it with something as tough as it is. Who makes the toughest rotary cutters out there? I want something to cut mostly hay feild edges and fence rows, but tough enough to cut small saplings. I was thinking about 7ft wide. Heavy Duty. What should I expect to pay? The old one has a rubber clutch type deal. Is that still available? What's best? Shear Bolt type?

Get a Rhino or another Bush Hog mower -- stay away from the Woods brand, they have poor qualilty.

My more detailed reasons from the past.

You get what you pay for, more or less.

As far as I know, all brands make heavy duty cutters that will outlast you. Most will cut 2" saplings without breaking. Most 6' and larger cutters have a clutch instead of the more problematic shear pins. The true HD cutters will cost a lot more than standard duty cutters, but are worth it depending on your work.

I've had really good work out of a 60" Landpride. I was really amazed at some of the stuff I cut down.

They make larger units as well.

This 60" cutter was just over a grand. Going to 72" or larger will probably take you to the $1500 to $2000 mark pretty quickly.

They use one on the army base to cut roads. Its a Hydro Ax.

I purchased a Brown 484 for $2200 - add front chains for $125

Best value I found in a HD rotary cutter. It will easily take care of hardwood saplings up to 4", and then some.

Have about 40 hours on mine reclaiming old pasture land overgrown with multiflora rose, privet, locust, etc.

I like it. I compared the specs and prices on quite a few before deciding on this one.

I called Brown Mfg. to find a local dealer and was put thru to Mr. Brown himself. I like dealing with a company where the owners and mgrs are on the front line.

The IMC 7 ft with dual tailwheels coming in at around $1750 is a tough machine--I cleared 50 acres on a old farm with saplings up to 4 inchs about 8 years ago with a 3 point version and when finished, I discounted it $100 from regular price and sold it retail, right away (only had a few scratches down the sides)--Ken Sweet
