Top Dressers

Has anyone ever used a "top dresser" attachment? I heard from a landscaper that golf courses use them for spreading sand, seed, topsoil, and fertilizer onto existing grass. Don't think I've ever seen one....

In my and other tool and die shops I made parts for a company that made about 6 or so different top dressers.. From a 1/4 ton self powered walk behind to a 10 ton tractor towed spreader..

It might be an idea to check with local golf courses to see if they have surplus usable equipment they have replaced..

When I was 16 and worked at the golf course, we would use a top dresser a lot. Golf courses are mainly grown on sand.

We would aerate the greens and fairways and then take the top dressers and fill all the holes with sand and grass seed. We would fill it up a couple of times a year with compost and spread it in the rough.

I think I need to go buy one like we used on the course, I think it was called a turfco.

I admit I've never heard of a "top dresser." I wonder if the landscaper was talking about a broadcast spreader which I have seen numerous times on golf courses doing the above mentioned tasks. They come in all sizes from walk behinds for homeowners (think Scotts spreading 30 pounds) to mammoth truck mounted spreaders like you see on highways spreading salt in the North 20 tons at a pop.
