Sounds like a lot of you guys here use a toothbar on your buckets.
What are the main advantages? Any disadvantages? Where is a good place to buy one? Are they hard to install?

Two bolts hold them on. Prices vary by region.

It's like putting a conventional bucket on steroids. They really dig.......

What is the best way to get a toothbar? Can they be ordered from the OEM dealer, or do they need to all be special ordered?

What kind of price will one run for a 72" bucket?

From a newbie, here's my experiance.
Pro's
Make it possible to dig up the roots of small trees.
Pick up objects you couldn't hardly pick up before like rocks tree's etc that used to just roll off the bucket.

Cons,
Only one that I see so far. I used to roll the bucket down and drive backwards pulling piles of leaves and dirt around. However, you can still do some finish leveling if you roll the bucket up and do it with the underneith of the bucket.

Installation
I used a 3/4" bimetel hole saw. Went thru it really easily
You might need some extra 3/4" washers for spacers.

The advantages far out-weigh the disadvantages to me. As has been said, you can get better soil breakage, load materials into the bucket easier (ever tried to load a balled up mess of leaves, vines and sticks and have it roll out in front of you?), and pop up small roots to remove saplings etc.
The toothbar usually mounts with only one 1/2 - 1" bolt on each end of the loader, but some have other methods such as bolting along the cutting edge which is not preferable in my book.
The only disadvantages are that the teeth stick out further than the cutting edge, so extra care in turning close to fences, houses, cars, etc. most be taken, and one has to be careful not to walk into them as they HURT!
The bar can come off very quickly when you want to use the cutting edge for smooth backdragging, but that's not always necessary as was said earlier.
Check out www.markhamwelding.com as many members have ordered their toothbars and have been very satisfied. Also, if you have a Woods Equipment dealer near you, they can order one for you. You'll need to measure the inside width of your loader bucket just behind the cutting edge and have that available when ordering. If you have a bolt on, not a weld on cutting edge, you may have to order from someone like Woods who offers a heavy duty toothbar for bolt on edges. I understand the Markham toothbars are only for welded cutting edges.
If you enter toothbar into www.google.com , you may come up with even more suppliers of toothbars. You may even go to a local welding shop and have them make one for you. There are numerous pictures of toothbars on TBN, just go to the top of the page and click on search, choose all forums, enter the word toothbar, entire phrase, and use the drop down menu and choose newer than one year, and you'll get plenty on toothbars.
You can right click any of the pictures and choose "save image as" and save it to your computer so that you can show it to a fabricator/welder to make one for you.

It takes me longer to find a wrench than it takes to remove the toothbar.
Installation was simply, 15 minutes max (with tools in hand). Slide bar into bucket, mark holes, remove bar, 2 holes with 3/4" bi-metal hole drill (or unibit), slide bar back in bucket, bolt it on, go dig.

There have been numerous posts recently RE: toothbars. The only disadvantage that has stuck in my mind is the one mentioned above...walking into it...sounds like a major OUCH, those teeth are sharp. I hope I never learn this 1st hand.

These folks, Markham Welding, make a great toothbar at one of the best prices around. Customer service and quality is top notch.

No question about it, TN, a toothbar makes your FEL more productive by orders of magnitude for excavating and is easily and quickly removable when you want to move snow in the winter or grade by backdragging the blade.

My toothbar and FEL pallet forks (which mount without removing the toothbar) are the two most useful implements, for their cost, that I have.

I keep a set of Harbor Freight adjustable wrenches in my tractor toolbox mainly for the purpose of taking my toothbar off. I don't have to do it much but I no longer have to go look for a wrench to do it with now. I'll second the advice to be careful when turning. My father's shop now has a nice little sliced in dent in the metal side from where I just barely misjudged the distance between my bucket and the building.
Toothbars are great! When I got my new tractor, it was the first one that I had ever had with a loader and I use it so much that I wouldn't get another tractor without a loader. You can be sure that any loader I have will now have a toothbar on it , too. It digs, rakes, loosens, and picks up things easier. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Markham is so backed up right now, they said they would call be back when they were caught up! Not exactly the service to be expected. I guess TBN is getting the word out pretty good. Hopefully they will turn things around soon /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have a JD 430 loader on my tractor - will the Markham Welding toothbar work on it?

Anyone else do this and know what the measurement is? I'd like to call them and get a quote.

They are waiting on a shipment of the teeth. Business is good for them right now /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Can't wait to get mine. I'm expecting the call also!

As long as the cutting edge does not bolt on it will work. You just have to give them the interior bucket measurement 8" in from the cutting edge.

Every company experiences backorders. Great customer service also comes down to how they deal with those backorders to keep new customers happy, and get the product out the door as quickly as possible.

I did not have to deal with a backorder situation with Markham, so I had it 4 days after I ordered, but I have heard of folks who have had to wait for a week or two. When I was pricing toothbars, none of the other manufacturers could get one for my machine to a dealer in less than 2 weeks - most of them were about 4 weeks out, as no one seemed to stock one for a subcompact. In addition to the extra wait time, the next cheapest toothbar was $150 more than the Markham.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I am now convinced that I need a new "toy" to use on my big "toy". I will contact Markam since that seems to be the favored supplier. I trust you guys opinions.

I think it's about time Markham ponied up for a paid ad on TBN. They sure are getting enough business /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think I remember it being just over $200 for a 72". My 48" was $158, plus shipping...........
Go to their website or call, the young lady who answers the phone is very personable and helpful.
