I'm in NY State, and had a simular situation with a 14' aluminum boat that I bought from an Ohio resident who had it at their summer cabin in Canada! Their son had passed away, and the parents sold me his Sylvan fihing boat. No paperwork etc. I only had a Bill of sale. The boat did have a 'stamped' metal data plate on it. I was required to fill out the standard NYS-DMV green form and provide them with a pencil rubbing of the numbers on the data plate. The 'rubbing' didn't come out all that well, as some of the characters were lightly stamped. I also cleaned the plate, rubbed pencil graphite in the characters, and took digital photos. I took the whole mess of forms, B of S, rubbings, and photos to them and voila, in several weeks I had a transferable registration! Your right in that you may never want to register it, but at sale time it's nice to have the paperwork in order! Hope this helps! ~Scotty
