"Tool Kit".....What the heck is it !?!?

My loving wife ran across this unusual "tool kit" and picked it up as a Christmas gift. The cleaver is razor sharp and a full 1/4" thick on the back side of the blade. The saw is thin and flexible, VERY sharp and most reminds me of a garden or arbor type of tooth with offset on both sides of the blade. The chisel is obviously beveled on two sides. All three have wood sheaths like some Asian tools and knives I've seen but there are no markings on any of them. The "cutters" appear hand forged and riveted...not particularly great quality but well made and very sharp. They do have a marking (Asian?). The syringe and the item that looks like a hypodermic needle (faux) complete with chain and devils head.........who know what that's about?????

So what is this thing....a zombie killing kit? Bonsai tree kit gone bad? Japanese heroin addicts carpentry tool set?

Geez.....I had to Google that to see if you were serious about it being a real gag kit once offered. Good one!! I was really hoping it was something with a little more mystique like a Chupacabra vaccination and veterinary kit.

Well, I think it might be a Chinese chicken or small animal. fish prep/butchering kit. Its portable in a nice case for those times you absolutely want fresh food on a picnic.

What I cant figure out is the syringe looking thing - I could see if the needle had a hole in it it could be to inject and marinate the meat?

Interesting to say the least.

Well, the eldest son was here on Christmas and immediately said it was Asian (probably Japanese). When I asked if it was because of the blade and sheath designs he said "Yeah, those look Asian too" but he picked up the devils head and said it was the main reason. He said he had seen a lot of masks and tokens that looked similar. I Google Image(d) "Japanese devils mask" and have to say I agree. He also pointed out that the syringe cap (unscrews) had a small hole in it and it's as if the "syringe" is used to blow air....much like a little pump. He also thinks the "faux hypodermic needle" is not for the syringe at all but a scribe or awl that has a pointed end and a punch end ( the other end is flat and hollow)......I told him he was a wealth of knowledge but he still couldn't tell me what the kit was for.

Mystery solved. I checked the responses this morning and when I saw "tree grafting" I set on another Google search. I put in "Japanese kit cleaver, saw, chisel" and went to Images and there were pics of my tools and of my tool set. It is a vintage/antique Bonsai tree sculpting set. When I had first searched "Bonsai tool kit" nothing like this came up.....guess it's all in how you do your search? Thanks for the input.....Boone gets the Best Guess Award!!!!

You guys are FUNNY. I havent even had time to put the engine back in my tractor yet ( rod bearing spun on 12/23/11 and engine rebuild finally took place sometime in Oct '12). Nearly 2000hrs of overtime this year.....wife will probably be thinking the "Lorena Bobbit" kit sounds like a good idea by April. Our overtime is ending Jan 7, 2013 after 5 yrs. straight of it. I don't think either of us will know how to act with all this "free time" I'll have this year, But I have missed my wife, family, church, tractor, guns, shop and have a huge honey do list waiting.......NO spring grafting for ME!!!!:laughing:

2000 hrs overtime - wow - thats two jobs in one, considering 2080 hrs per year is 40/week - maybe she was thinking to "graft" a new hubby instead!

Sounds like that is not going to happen - just in time.

The cleaver looks similar to one I bought at a Chinatown market in Houston Texas many years ago. It looks like they took a piece of carbon steel plate, forged it to a cleaver shape and heat treated it on the bottom 1" or so. The heat treated part doesnt rust. It was razor sharp when I got it and still is after being thrown around in the rarely used knife drawer. Those Asians sure know how to temper steel.
