Anyone out there have an intelligent idea on what to cover a tool cart lid with? Something they like? The top gets used for a worktable so shiny painted metal don't work. Neither does carpet, shavings, slivers etc. Wood? Vinyl? Rubber? Suggestions? I'll glue or screw it on. This is the one I have.

Well, it's not strong enough to hammer on - what do you plan on using it for? Just to set parts/tools on? A place for random hardware? Keep that pic of the wife? (with your faverite traktor on udder side!)

Screw on plywood. Then change as desired.

A nice rubber mat.. easy to keep clean & wont mar the pretty box..
Not so good to do paperwork on tho..

The top on that is to keep honest people out. If you use it as a work top, the tool you need will be underneath and all the drawers locked as well.

If you want a bench or table top just get a regular bottom roll around box that doesn't have a lid that opens.

They sell them already with work tops and trays to either side to hold parts as well. Not to mention your not inhibiting access to tools with whatever you are working on.

There are "wings" for the service carts like you have that allow a small space to either side though.

They are not ment as a work top as much as a convenient place to set things from what you are working on.

Lastly if you notice the lid on your harbor freight service cart doesn't open fully like they normally do, if you weight it with a decent work top not only will you be locking the drawers and covering the tools in the top but the lid won't stay open even if you wanted it to. As the dampers are just powerful enough to keep the thin sheet metal top up.
