Took down 2 oak trees, yeah I'm cheap

So cheap once I had them pulled over...And stumped with saw a bit...there was still so much dirt on stumps, I couldn't even budge them with the tractor....
Pressure wash the dirt away
I think I would've been cleaner to just go wallow in a pen with hogs in the mud ..
But it's done!
Onto the burn pile next

All done!

Fair amount of wood from both, still need to finish stumping both stumps..

I'm too cheap to go rent the proper equipment...
I guess between the subsoiler shank and having an extension ladder long enough to get 2/3 the way up tree ..I just make do..

Other than messy, IMO, that was a good way to get the job done

nice job, did the same. hired a neighbor w/ tractor backhoe, & i used my fell to complete the job. it's amazing how much those root balls weigh. well worth the $500 for the job. more importantly, glad you safely managed your job

note the angled cut on the right image w/o a notch on opposite cutting side to avoid kickback. he knew what he was doing.

Here’s a big oak stump (42” @ the cut of the stump) I dug out with an JD 26p. Once out of the hole I pulled it downhill with my TC45DA. I couldn’t lift it to move it or even the smallest one (there were five total).

A buddy has big CTL (Vermeer FT100) and it couldn’t pick it up. He got his excavator and scraped the clay off it and still couldn’t lift it. He got his excavator Cat 304cr blade under it and then lifted the other side with the bucket to move it.

You're just getting the job done. Safety would be the only thing I'd dock you on, but hell, we're all guilty of putting our rears on the line for the sake of time, money, or convenience- it comes with the territory I think.

Nope cut the pancake roots of the root ball with subsoiler shank ..went up tree 2/3 the way ..choked a 3" strap, 3/8" chains from there to tractor pulled over in 4L....
The subsoiler is in 2nd pic...fairly hefty attachment...

I'm thinking a slab will be poured there eventually so tree, most of the roots and stumps and all in one shot...

That red southern dirt can be heavy. I have two white oak slabs 63 inches in diameter I plan to make a sled so I can get them flat for a table top. Oak can be pretty heavy as you know.

Ah, cute little twigs, I had five oak trees that I let grow for 40 years. I own a John Deere 510 backhoe, 80 hp, 20,000lbs. It took weeks and destroyed the bucket but I dug them up. They were 30 in or larger in diameter. The root balls were 15 ft across, I used the backhoe to shove them over after digging holes big enough to hide a volkswagon in. Two were so large I had to have a tree crew come in with big saws to cut up the trunks. I used the hoe to roll the root balls into the woods around my home.

I'd be temped to drag those stumps out to the road and put a "FREE" sign on them just to see what happens.

Yup, went thru that a few years ago. Had a tree service drop a dozen or so larger ones around the house that I wasn't comfortable cutting down. Then the next year when I retired I dropped at least a dozen more. Some I was able to pull over with a cable.
I was able to dig out a few with the backhoe but had to use a 4 or 5 pulley system to pull the stumps out. Even had the little JD with a strap connected to the LS to help pull, lol.
I was able to just roll the stumps around on the ground to get most of the dirt off and the ones I could pick up I picked up and dropped a few times. I used the pressure washer to either get it light enough to move, light enough to pickup or clean enough for the chain saw to whittle it down to get it to the burn pile. The really larger stumps I just let it dry for a few weeks then was able to knock most of the dirt off either rolling it around or with the backhoe ripper to dig at it. We have the grey/tan clay here.
