too much Power Service == Busted Engine??

Here is the tale of woe.
32 HP 25 year old Kubota, in middle winter pasture cleanup, CLANG-CLANG-CLANG-you get it!

Local tractor mechanic opens it up and sees broken rod and piston.

He also says that the diesel is "smelling strong." He asks if I have been using lots of power service. I proudly say "YES", I got a great deal locally when a farm store sold out. He said that he sees engine damage when too much PS is used.

Anyone else know about this?

Man, so sorry to hear about this. Sounds expensive.

How much did you put in there? Any explanation from the mechanic on exactly how PS causes this kind of damage?

Is PS solvant based??? So if I fill my tank with 5X as much as needed it will not hurt?

Which PS did you use? Silver, white or red bottle?

I don't think that PS would hurt your engine. Unless you were trying to run about a 50-50 mix of diesel and PS.... Is it possible that you added gasoline to the diesel? That will hurt it as it will burn much hotter than normal and would spike the combustion pressures from faster burn rate. Reasonable strengths of PS (or other flavors of additive) shouldn't damage the engine. If they did, it would be more from higher burn temperatures, which may lead to a hole in a piston, but not a thrown rod.

Were you lugging the engine down at the time? Very low rpms with very high loads? That can lead to rod / crank damage.

Frank miller - All additives are solvent based. Heck, diesel is a solvent. Common ingredient in additives is "stoddard solvent" which is paint thinner aka mineral spirits. Other common one is "petroleum distillate" which is normally Kero. Naphtha is common also. Common light solvents like acetone are to fast burning and have negative lubricity. That can lead to wear issues in pumps and injectors, but not normally a thrown rod.

There are additives that are not solvents. Is Lucas UCL a solvant, no!

I asked a power service representative when I bought my diesel truck. He said over treating would not hurt the engine at all. He was fine with customers using more of their product... Seriously, he did say over treating would not hurt anything.

I dont believe that overdosing would do any harm at all..

Ive read where people have posted..in various bulletin boards that diesel fuel IS a solvent and that is ISNT a solvent.

Ive had 2 greasy battery terminal adapters soaking in a 1lb metal coffee can for more than 2 years now..and periodically I'll swirl it around..and at times Ive had to add more diesel fuel because of evaporation...and to date the diesel fuel HASNT CUT ONE BIT of the grease off those terminal adapters??????????

I have heard that many of the naptha/petroleum distillate packages will cause an increase in metals showing up in a UOA (used oil analysis), notably copper... related to decreasing the lubricity of the fuel to an extent... posters have communicated the direct correlation to their use of "unnameable fuel additive" in that case anyway...

The Diesel Garage, Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forum, diesel Place are all good sites to read up on the new ULSD, 2 stroke oil, Power Service, Stanadyne, Lucas, etc...

If you had some wear that was getting worse, were using lower lubricity fuel (ULSD), and managed to thin it out considerably more over an extended period... and enough solvent managed to blow past the rings into your oil... that might be a recipe for disaster... I guess the thing is, everything eventually wears out, and it's the compounding effects of damage that determine how fast they do...

If you want to know for sure, I would look into getting that oil checked out to see what lurks in there...
