My old 1971 JD 820 is smoking heavy out the by pass. Still runs great, just chokes me and I think its time to be looked at. What am I looking at having done? How much should it cost us? Thank you folks.

Sounds as if new pistons, sleeves, crank brgs & valve grind are needed.

Is the oil pressure still acceptable? If it starts normal and runs fine I probably wouldn't mess with it till it was getting harder to start.

I'm not sure if that is a sleeved engine or not but at a minimum new pistons, rings, sleeves/cylinder bore, valve job, and I would have the shop check the block and head. While you're doing that you might as well do all new bearings and gaskets. Probably be at least a couple grand.

agree w/wmonroe run it till it's hard starting or blows out the dipstick, etc. (just be sure the blowby's not constricted!) then face the inevitable & do it right. weigh the overhaul cost vs another tractor...probably worth it if the rest of the drive train, hydraulics are good & it still serves your needs. who knows, it could be years. i ran an older massey 35 for decades w/blowby...until i got the fever for a new one. best regards

How many hours?
My JD 2030, just over 4000 hours blowby is bad enough to blow leaves and dust up where ever I go.

It only has 1470 original hours and has sat way more than was used by original owner. I'm thinking that might be part of the problem. I guess I'll just run it..still starts and runs like new with no apparent power loss.

You might do the engine a big favor if you could operate it under a very heavy load for a few hours. Diesels do not tolerate light load situations and end up with blow by.

Wow, funny you mention that. Last year I let a buddy plow up a food plot with it, worked it hard. It quit smoking for a month or so then started it again.

Oil control rings could be seized. You could try this as it worked well for me on an old 80's era diesel auto I had. Pull the glow plugs on all cylinders if you have them or the injectors. Pour Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder. Most likely about 1/4 to 1/2 cup. Let it sit for a day or two. Disable injector pump (usually) by pulling a fuel solinoid wire and crank motor. Make sure you place rags over open injector holes as oil will spay all over the place. Replace injectors or glow plugs and hookup removed wire and start. It will smoke fiercely for a bit but should clean up. Put a heavy load on it and see where you stand after that.

This is a good idea. Hook it up to a moldboard plow and go at it for a few hours. The big pto generator is a good one too.
