Luckily it's going to be another week until I get my home equity loan - otherwise I'd be really stressed about this! As it is, I hope it doesn't snow too much more between now and then (as I already sold my old tractor)!

What I'm looking for:
Tractor with loader, box blade and brush hog delivered to the 14850 zip code.
- 6' brush hog
- 6' loader
- 6' box blade
- 6' tiller
- capable of comfortably running all of those
- block heater or whatever for cold weather
- filled tires
- chains

It would be nice to have 4wd, of course.

Now, it looks like I can actually get most of this (other than 4wd) with the MX5000SU.

Advantages to the MX5000SU:
- new!
- warranty!
- it's a "real" tractor (a small utility tractor as opposed to a large consumer tractor)
- the price seems pretty good

Disadvantages:
- it's a bit clunky - old fashioned - bare bones
- it's only 2wd (could be an issue with a heavy load in the FEL)
- as a limited production run getting parts for it could be very difficult

It would all just be so much simpler if someone, somewhere, just met my price ($20k max - absolutely every charge, tax, add-on included) and requirements in one package! No chance!

Anyway... I'm talking about having this to run on my 40 acres. It's very rough and hilly terrain. About 25 acres of it is mostly open (I'd surely like to make it quite open) with the rest treed.

I'd like the tractor for brush hogging, snow plowing (I'm fine with the FEL for this - I did it that way several seasons with a Bobcat), cleaning up and making roads and trails, generally evening out my land (it was left in deep furrows by a previous owner - I'd gradually work it down to even) and for planting a few acres in corn and other grains.

Is that enough information?

Anyway... I've also been looking at used stuff. Seems I could get the 4WD if I took, say, a NH 3930 or 3910 or perhaps even a MF1455V (if the seller would ever get back to me). What am I missing? Ah, yes... I'm missing a tractor, just now!

Thanks,
charles

my 2 cents - 4wd makes a huge difference to what a tractor will do. I've been flattening and evening out my hilly rocky places and can't imagine doing it with a 2wd tractor. At one time I had a 2wd tractor and a small dozer. Sold both when I got my first 4wd tractor.

The MX5000 is a nice unit - it is not actually different in strength or weight from the Kubota L models in the 45-50 hp range, just has simpler shifting and controls. A friend has an MX5000 4wd - very capable rig.

Personal opinion here. If I was buying a 2WD tractor I would buy a true AG tractor with more wieght. The MX only weighs around 3500#. That's not a lot without 4WD. Personally I like the 5100 series from Deere better in a 2WD AG tractor. Those units weigh in at around 4500#. The NH TN series are also very good along with the Massey 400 series. I would not want an MX without 4WD.

Ah, man! Both of you are bringing me down! (Ahem.)

It was so nice to have made a decision - to have a fallback tractor! I don't think that the TN or 400 series are in the budget range (not that it's easy to tell - I don't see many manufacturers advertising MSRP). And for a JD, let's see... It's on JD's web site at $16k. My local dealer offered it to me with a loader at $20k...

So... You think smaller but 4wd? The new 4wd I can afford (maybe a L3440 gear, surely a L2800) isn't big enough to pull a 6' brush hog, for example...

Sigh.

I had an offer of a used L4900... Maybe I'll go look at it next week...

I have been the route with 2wd and never again , 4wd makes a huge difference. It depends alot on what you will be cutting with the bush hog and at what speed you will be using others here with the size tractor you may consider can help you out.I have about 50pto hp and it is way more than enough for my 6ft. bush hog.

"I had an offer of a used L4900... "

Maybe it's an M4900? I don't remember an L4900 - anyway the M4900 would be a good size for the uses you describe. It has the 5-cylinder engine - smooth as silk. With 4wd and a loader it's a lot of tractor.
