Tonneau covers anyone??

We can't get a topper until "who-knows-when" for our new Ranger because no manufacturer is building them yet. So we are looking at Tri-Fold Tonneau covers types for the interim. Can anyone here expound on what we should be looking for concerning these bed covers? Never owned one before of any type!

ArlyA- I have a solid tonneau cover on my Tundra. It keeps my bed dry despite the weather. There are some limitations in the size that I can carry with the cover on. It is a PITA to put on and take off, but I can do it by myself.

My BIL bought a trifold cover for his Honda Ridgeline and his reportedly leaks in the rain, but he has the luxury of being able to handle larger loads w/o taking it off.

There are tradeoffs.

I have used a BAKFlip MX4 Folding Tonneau Cover on my last two tucks. They cost more than I would like but are a really good product. Not 100% waterproof but keep most moisture out. Easy to flip up out of the way when you need to haul something. Also makes the back lockable. It would not be hard to break into it but it keeps things out of sight and at least helps keep honest people honest. I bought mine from Auto Anything.

That tri-fold looks a lot like the Ford supplied unit I have on my F-150. It is easy to use and absolutely waterproof. It's a dealer installed option so you might just check and see what kind of deal you can get. If they really like you, it might be available at cost.

I put a BAK Revolver X2 on my truck a couple of years ago when I switched to a GN and had to ditch the fiberglass cap. The cover leaks about the same amount as the cap did (around the upper corner of the tailgate and the bed and cover) but otherwise has been trouble free and still looks like new. Nice and secure and gives complete access to the bed when needed. My dad had a tri-fold on his truck until the wind ripped it off when he was hauling his 5th wheel. They don't like cross winds when partially open. Over $6K in damage to the truck and trailer.

The web site you show has some rollup ones. That's what we have on the Tacoma. Cannot find online now the one we have. Think it was Tonno something. This site also has some rollups: Tonneau Covers | Hard, Soft, Roll Up, Folding Truck Bed Covers

The most likeable things on our 2005 Tacoma are the tonneau cover and the adjustable mirrors (from inside) vs. our 1997 Tacoma that we liked far better to drive. Only use the 2005 beast just when we need a pickup, about 1,000 miles/yr.

The Tonno something just requires you to open the tail gate about 6 inches, put hand in on left side and push the little lever to unclip it. Then just roll it up along the rails that are installed at the sides with spacers/whatever at front and rear. It had enough support slats or whatever in it to keep it flat when fastened back in place. Sides Velcro down but almost automatic unless you're real particular in wanting a very tight tonneau.

Previous 3 tonneaus were all snap-ons. The one on the 1997 Tacoma required a space heater to be used underneath it in winter to get the rear snaps back together. You want an easy clip-in at the back and rollup or fold to take it back. Rollup would be more out of the way if hauling stuff requiring the whole bed.

I always figured they provide fuel mileage improvement, but actual tests via detailed methods have not said this. Good for looks and to conceal stuff back there. We've also a netting that we install in the back that keeps stuff from shifting forward.

I thought mine was waterproof until it went through Hurricane Harvey on my last truck. Even then it only leaked probably 1/4 cup or so of water. Just enough that I can't say it is 100% waterproof.

I had an extang hard trifold on my s10 when I had the truck. It was ok, but did leak a little. If I got another truck, I'd get a soft roll-up cover.

I have a Ford branded one on my F350... I think it was 3-350.00 it's black Vinyl and rolls up hen I don't want the bed covered. .. I recently got a 19 F150 and bought one very similar off of eBay for something like 120.00. ..honestly, I see no significant difference between the two other than the OEM Ford one has the Forl Oval logo embossed if it. Other than that, they are virtually identical. I like the ease of rolling it up and rolling it back when I'm done. I had a truck once with a hard cover and hated it. It was too heavy and awkward to remove if I wanted to put something in the bed that wouldn't fit under it.
