To late for sweet corn?

Do you think it is to late to plant sweet corn? If not what day variety would still work? I have a fair amount of 78 day that I was thinking about using.

You're in zone 4 or 5 at best. I just planted my late corn, but I'm in zone 6. I hate to be pessimistic, but.... Maybe you can get enough for a few young ears to eat. I guess you probably already know that, and were just hoping for some encouragement! Sorry.....

78 days (maybe 72 for Sugar Buns, or 75 for Bodacious) is about as short a growing time you can hope for.

i think its too late. 78 days is after germination so in reality its more like 90 days. also as daylight length decreases maturity time increases.

I was gonna say heck no! But then saw your in wisconson and its only 78 in the day? Can you even grow anything at that temperature? Its in the 90s here for months it seems and 100+ at least 5 days im sure. Your temps sound like our April temps.

Sorry i just read it wrong 78 is the days of corn to maturity.

If your summer has been like ours it's too late. Corn likes heat and lots of it. I believe 78 day corn is 78 days after it germinates and only if you get the required degree days.

At this time last summer I was getting ready to harvest my early sweet corn and this summer it's only a foot high. I was planning on planting another 2/3rd of an acre of sweet corn but gave up a few weeks ago.

I did plant a few 500 foot rows of bush beans to use up old seed I had sitting around. I should get many bushels of green bush beans.

Beans, beets, radishes, lettuce, and cabbage family is about there is time for, really. Save the seed for next year.

If I can get it in before the end of the week I might give it a try. I can get some 60 day as well to try.

Well I got it planted. About 600 row feet. 1/3 78 day and 2/3 60 day. Now we need rain. To say it is Dry would be an understatement.

If we had adequate moisture it would be up in two days. Hopefully it don't take 12 days to sprout.

The average high in June was 78.8 degrees. We average 12 days over 90 a year and seldom hit 100. We regularly grow 200+ bu field corn so yes we can grow stuff here.


Does anybody know how they figure maturity date on sweet corn? Is it the same as field corn or is it til harvest? I am assuming that most sweet corn is harvested before it would technically be mature when compared to field corn.

It's a bit wormy is about the only bad part.
