How do I get the plug out to install this? Looks like it is about a 26mm hex is needed to get the plug out. Is there a special tool I need to buy?

After draining the cooling system, knock out the core plug by usng a punch and hit it near an edge. Remove the core plug, clean the bore and then follow the instructions on the core plug. They are usually installed dry ( no Permatex or other sealer).

I took a 3/4" x4" bolt and ground three sides of the hex down until the bolt head fit the female hex of the threaded plug. Then threaded a 3/4" nut onto the bolt and welded it solid. An 1-1/8" impact socket and a 1/2" air impact makes short work of the plug. They are torqued extremely tight at the factory. They will come loose with a socket and breaker bar. Then assemble the heater as per the included instructions. Several guys in the shop have built the same 'tool' and they have served us well. I'm not sure I want to know how much a 26MM impact allen socket would cost.

The plug in question has a straight thread. It is not a soft plug.
