it's time to repack front wheel bearings. the problem is i can't get caps off. nh service said they unscrewed. i can't get this to happen. it dosen't look like the cap end was formed for a wrench. slight taper and radiused corners. does anyone know do they screw out or tap off with a screwdriver. thanks in advance.

From your description, you must have a 2wd TN55. The diagram for that tractor is shown below. Part number 13 is your endcap. When you look at the detail of the hub into which the edcap fits, it looks like threads shown on the diagram. Can you use a stap-wrench to grip the hub and turn it?
According to Messicks.com, these caps are $35 each, so you don't want to damage them.
I'm not a mechanic, so I don't know how to remove the endcaps, but this is what I found that might be helpful.

yes it is 2wd
had not thought of strap wrench. good idea.
i had jacked it up and removed wheel to try and get better angle on it with a wrench. still wouldn't come loose.
i guess i'll force my self to go buy another tool. i'm sure the strap wrench is less than $35.
is the diagram from nh site?

Yes, the diagram is from the NH site, actually Messicks.com, and then click on parts, then the New Holland logo, then enter TN55 in the block. All the parts diagrams come up and this one is way down near the bottom under all the 4WD front axle stuff at the top of the list.

I'd use a heat gun and gently heat the cap, might be able to get a c clamp to grab two opposite side of the cap to knock it lose.
Do you have those really wide mouth adjustable pliers to grab the cap? a pipe wrench can also grab the cap and can be wide enough.I'd be careful not to damage it. if all fails, you can beat it to submission or drill a hole in the cap and use a screwdriver to pry it open.

Vice-grips makes a chain wrench. It would mildly mar the cap, but once you have a pair, you'll find more reasons to use it. Also, they make a really large mouth conventional one that will work too. Or use a pipe wrench.
