Once again I wish there was at least one followup question for the TBN survey. In this case, I'd ask

(1) How satisfied the owner was with his/her choice
(2) What conditions do they excel/suck in

I would answer my own questions this way: (1) Very satisfied with my Aggies, (2) They excel in any condition in which there's something to latch onto like mud with rocks or roots under, in the forest, in my meadow...and they suck on ice (without the chains) or in clay-type mud where there's nothing beneath to catch on. Also not too good on the lawn.

Good topic Pete!

I've got aggies too and like them a lot. The other day I was box blading and I could look down and see the slip on the front tires. I suspect the rears were slipping a bit too, couldn't tell from my seat. With the load I was pulling and the soil conditions I'm sure turfs would have spun and maybe R-4s as well. I noticed the same pulling a disc last fall.

When my tires do finally start to dig in they go deep and go fast. My soil is sandy and loose. Using my loader Sunday to dig some brush out I dug a lot of tire sized holes as well /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I'd have been more careful if it weren't where I'll be putting in a drive later.

I agree, no good on ice (no chains) but are any tires?

I don't plan on having a lot of finish lawn when we move so I'll use the 790 for brush hogging and continue to use my Craftsman lawn tractor for finish mowing around the house. I never even considered turfs.

I did drive my tractor across our current lawn once to change the sand in the sandbox (silly tractor uses /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif). Ground was fairly hard, 2wd, very gingerly driving and steering and I still got lots of bar marks. R-1s are definitely not for a finished lawn /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Tire Survey. Isn't that the procedure, for when a transom is not available, the surveyor simply rolls an old tire, and wherever it goes, that's the property line? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Seriously, I agree. Something most new owner's ask, and if they don't think about it, they should.

(But, if the answers are already available, we can't dip into our old material. We might have to start thinking of new responses, and thinking makes my head hurt. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif).

Truf tires.
Great for working around trees in which the root system a top feeder also mowing FEL work.
Lousy when plowing snow plus ice and muddy ground also damp slopes, tire chains are a must.
Looks like I'll be leaving the tire chains until mid June w/all this snow left to melt, and the ground to dry up afterwards. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

R-4's. In my opinion they fail miserably. They are nowhere close to what a turf tire will do towards saving the ground and they are worthless in any kind of mud or snow. I would never get them if I had a choice. They were on my tractor when I bought it so didn't have a choice. I didn't think they would be that bad but they are for what I do; using the tractor as a farm and ranch unit.

Just what I've done I am very pleased with the R-4's that are on my L35. Was working last week in almost a foot of mud and grime trying to level out the back hill some and making teh yard more level. Now everything is all mud that you can't even walk through. Oh well I was having fun anyway. ha,ha. Now I guess with my situation with a backhoe on the back it makes a big difference with traction so I guess I really don't know how they act without all that weight on the back. Will probably take 1/2 the year for this mud to dry up to something more managable but I will just make more if that's all I have to work with. ha,ha.

I have the turfs on my B7100 as well and for my applications they're the right tire. Mostly mowing and bush hogging. My wife likes the yard to have a nice finished look and my other tire choice (R1s) would leave bar marks in some areas.

The turfs are mostly worthless in more than a couple of inches of snow without chains, even with 200 lbs of wheel weights and the weight of the back blade and operator. With chains, absolutely great, even with ice under the snow. The wheel weights seem to take care of traction problems for the most part, in all but deep mud situations (8" or more).

The B7100 had the turfs on it when I bought it from the previous owner, so I didn't have to think real hard about tire selection. I don't really need the R1s or R4s, so I'd probably get the turfs again if I moved to a larger tractor.

Greetings
I have the Galaxy o.s. turf tires filled with rim guard on L4610. They hold quite a lot of that goop. Dealer estimated the rears weigh 600 lbs. each! Not sure if he exaggerated any;). No complaints using them in roughly 50 hrs. of FEL use except for ice:p. They look like a good candidate for chains next winter. I am not experiencing any tire slippage filling FEL with snow, frozen dirt, or now that there is green grass out there, in the dirt. I am very pleased not tearing up the wifes' grass.

Hi Mutt, /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

[[[I have the Galaxy o.s. turf tires filled with rim guard on L4610. They hold quite a lot of that goop. Dealer estimated the rears weigh 600 lbs. each! Not sure if he exaggerated any;).]]]

I think our tractors are about the same size (JD4700). The Michelin XM27 (R1-radial-type) tires on my tractor (tire capacity 91.1 gal.) will hold 683# of Rimguard (@ +/- 10#/gal, .. 75% fill.) the tires themselves weigh 227#. Thats 910# PER TIRE, and we havent counted the weight of the rim. Ballpark? -- 1000#/per (filled) tire-wheel set! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

My guess is that your dealer is not exaggerating,... maybe underestimating?! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
