Got a JD 320 garden tractor with hydro lift, got it for a good deal with 48" deck, so I splurged and bought a brand new snow plow, with the manual angle kit.

Kawi twin motor, wheel weights and chains on the back, goes pretty good in a straight line, but gets pushed sideways when I angle the plow. I've got front chains on my 4x4 tractor which takes care of the problem there.

Any thoughts on putting chains on front non drive tires to help get a lateral grip? any one do this?

Thanks, JB.

I might see if I could find some with a chain (or a pair of chains) that run parallel to the outer chains to help with the lateral traction (something like this perhaps). But it should be doable.

Nice looking tractor. I doubt that chains on the front tires will help very much, but hey if you can find a deal on some give them a try and report back. One tip is to be sure that you do not have your plow too low which will result in taking some weight off the front tires which could cause steering problems.

Thanks for the replies,

The fronts are pretty small, I'm just worried that they may not turn well with chains and no power to them, maybe skid.

But I think I'll try it, I've got alot of surplus chain, just have to put a set together, though all I have is reg ladder type, probably the different patterns would be better.

It's to bad cause this machine really wants to push, but that front end limits it's ability.

I had a similar problem with my plow on troy built tractor. I cured it by lowering the pressure in the front tires for full contact and adding lead bars to the very front frame of the tractor (about 75 lbs). I also added lead weights to the center floor board and the rear of the tractor along with the wheel weights.

A good time to try the length of roller chain around the center/circumference of the tire, and air it up to tighten it.

For sure something I will try to do (when the opportunity arises, like yours :) )
