I think its time to replace my anode. Past experience is it's a son-of-a-gun to break the anode loose using only a breaker bar. Does anyone have any tips to share and advice on using an impact gun?

Just changed one in my water heater. Just dropped the impact on it and pulled the trigger. Came right out no problem. 1/2" impact.

Turn off water. Turn off electric. Drain the tank. The rest is just mechanical. While you're at it, replace the anode too. It's probably wasted.

Edit: Ops. I was thinking you were changing a heater. 🫣

The standard rust breaking sequence for mechanical fasteners on vehicles seems to start with light taps alternating L and R to break the corrosion without breaking the fastener. Water heater tanks don't have thick walls so proceed carefully.

I'll mention I bought a Milwaukee 2967-20 1/2" impact specifically to change out the factory installed anode on our heater. Our anode broke free with no issues. The Milwaukee impact has an unusual feature that once the bolt ( or anode ) is loose it immediately slows to a moderate speed ( much less vibration).
I do not regret the expense at all because the impact is superior to my several electric & air impacts. Perfect for rotating tires.

More info = We service our electric heater every six months ( replacing the elements and vacuuming out the sediment ) & our prior anode lasted three years.

Fire up your favorite impact gun and go for it. It is a much better method than a breaker bar. Most water heater manuals tell owners to check every six months, and I'm sure that very few of us ever do. I have often wondered whether it was to keep the threads clean by being chased several times a year.

I switched to electronic anodes fifteen or so year ago, and I highly recommend them. Once and done.

All the best,
