I need to install a large 80lb transfer switch for my mom's place. It is an outside box, with other weak plastic (sprinkler& phone) boxes beneath it, preventing an easy way support it. Ideally I would have it installed very close to the main box as 6 (2/0) wires run between the two at 2.75$ per foot, but I am concerned about getting the knock outs (therefore connecting conduit) lined up correctly. Remember this is a solo operation. Ideas?

Use plastic conduit. Boiling water softens it enough to scootch it over to correct errors.

A good hair dryer will soften the electrical PVC conduit.

If possible use an engine hoist to support the transfer switch. Making height adjustment are easy.

I use an RV scissors jack to hold heavy control panels while I anchor them. I added some pieces of 2x10 plank to both faces to get a bit bigger footprint.

Not knowing the complete "situation", could you temporarily screw a horiz. 2x2-4 at the lower (bottom) side? Once it's sitting on it you'll have one free hand to drive in some temp screws. You might be able to rest it on this 2x2 and jamb a diag. 2x4 or a shovel, whatever to keep it there just until you lag it on.:confused3:

Get a friend to help you or you will end up hurting yourself and breaking the other boxes.

I would mount the box on "C" channel lag screwed to the building studs. Once you get one bolt in it will be supported to get the others in and then move around as necessary to line up with connection points. That will also span the other wires conduits. Choices are to use either the 7/8 or 1 5/8" deep channel. Just one other idea.

I mounted my 200 amp ASCO switch empty. Ran all the 2" steel conduit, pulled the heavy wires and then reinstalled the guts. Too expensive to damage or get debris and cuttings into the works.
