Finally got a time lapse video done. The hardest part was getting everything to cooperate with the editing software and you tube.
The lighting could have been better but I learned for next time. This is 6 hours compressed into 5 minutes. The Bobcat and tree shear got a 3 hour head start shearing and positioning trees for the Gyro Trac to mulch. They were mostly hardwoods with an average diameter of 8 inches. Some were as big as 20 inches. I was in the Gyro Trac and would have caught the shear crew if I hadn't mulched a pile of concrete in the section before this one. Sharpened the teeth the best I could but many were ruined.

I may do one from in the cab of the Gyro Trac next. We've got a job coming up where I'll be taking out some big trees. Should make a pretty good video.

Now that's what I call TECHNO MULCHING!!! :D

I really like it. Very efficient use of equipment.

That combo would work well on that job I just looked at.

excellent video! the music adds a nice touch.

Fish and Quik, tell me about your tree shears... how well have they worked since you got them? how long does it take to sever a 10" tree (for example)? how are the hydrolic needs compared to a mulcher on a SS or CTL (use more or less)? how much does one cost new/used?

Hope I'm not overthrowing the thread. Thanks guys.

Ours is a fecon 14" shear. It is rated to cycle in 8 seconds but I don't think it takes that long. It can only handle something like 25 GPM so you leave the hydraulics on low flow.

It has the accumulator arm, but I disabled it and put a T in the lines to make it operate with the other grapple arm. This gives you 2 grapple arms holding the tree all the time and eliminates the electrical connection.

You can find them new for around $10K if you search. MSRP is a little higher. It has expanded our capabilities to pay for itself quickly on the ROW project. We would have had to leave all those trees cut in the video or use rope/chainsaw to cut them due to the road and power lines.

makes a lot of sense. from a forestry standpoint in my area, it would work great for timber sale site prep, clearing non-commercial trees. a lot of our logging contracters in the area are non-mechanized chainsaw & grapple skidder crews and HATE cutting sapling/poles. So one could go in with a tree shear, cut all the non merchantable material, and lessen the work for loggers.

this may be a dumb question, but does a mini- hyrdo-ax type of head exist for SS/CTL's?
