I was cutting a 10acre field today and I hit a stump hidden in tall brush. My cutter is vibrating pretty bad. Rotor seems to spin fine. I hammered out a piece on the rotor in between the blades. It helped some but still vibrating. Any suggestion besides pulling the entire rotor out? Thanks in advance.

You have probably bent the rotor if you have no teeth or metal missing anywhere . If you need to keep working you can try what i did once to get you out of "imediate" trouble . With my mowers the bolts that hold the flails on have some exposed thread left . I have screwed another nut on that thread as a balance weight to stop the vibration . It takes a few goes changing the position of the nut to find the correct spot and you may find you need more or less weight . If you cant get rid of all the vibration do'nt keep working it as it will fatigue the mower and machine .

Double check everything. There is a 1" cold roll bar that runs thru each ring off the rotor. I have broken a piece of this bar between two rings and it went to vibrating pretty good. It is 1" cold roll that can be repaired easly. I would look there if it in fact spins freely. Good luck and keep us posted. If you infact bent the drum then before you replace PM me. I have options for you. Robbie

Robbie. The bar that it bent runs across the drum. It is welded to the blade holders It looks like you could just grind out the welds and re weld a new piece of iron in it. But how do you balance the rotor?

not sure about a timber ax, but on my gyro trac toma ax head I used to bend the end shafts- there were two stubby, maybe 12-18" long shafts on each end...bearing and housing go on shaft...would typcially bend one end or another...man would that thing shake the fillings out of your teeth...

yet to have that happen on the fecon though...

I was fortunate that I had clean breaks and when it was all put back together it was balanced. If you replaced the damaged peices with exact peices then you might be okay. In your case after the repairs you might have to get it balanced. There is a company down south that did it but I think they may be out of business. I know our tech has a field balancing kit so we might can ask Fred if they could do that and what charges would aply. Good luck

Elk,

If you need a good set of used extra blades, I have some.

Hope everything works out getting your ax fixed. Beleive me I have had my share of breakdowns. (They aint never cheap)

elkland,

In which area are you?

I'm not sure we could be of much help to you because of US immigration/labor laws restrictions... Basically, if a US citizen can do the job, they won't let a Canadian cross the border to do the same job. There are some exceptions though, like if there's a vibration problem on our machine, then it's warranty support so that's ok. There might be other exceptions like this that could allow our guy to enter the US to help you, but it might be just faster to find someone locally, to be honest... :(

By the way, let us know who you find to balance your machine. It might be good for both the customers and the manufacturers community to build a network of recommended field-balancing technicians...

Good luck :)

I started to take the blades off and noticed when I hit the stump the blades shifted. I may have gotten lucky. Everything still looks straight i.e. the rotor. So It looks like the bolts that hold the blades on got bent and shoved a couple of the blades forward. I have a new set of bolts and blades im gonna try.So i will let you know how it works out. Let hope it does the trick. New rotor is over 3000$ ouch. Thank for the support.
