Hi all,

Been several years since... But getting back online in the tractor forums.

I've been researching different implements and designs for aerating, overseeing prep, disc-ing, cultivating, pulverizing, etc. but I'm no closer figuring a good solution for multipurpose use. I have 10 acres with just over 2 cleared for lawn and a starter pasture (thinking about goats & chickens). The parts of the yard were turned with a potatoe plow (middle buster) and tilled last fall - still looks ok. Last fall and this spring we cleaned out 2 large areas to develop like pasture. Neithern did well this summer and have been overcome by hard barren spots or wire grass weeds.

I'd like a tool that can help me aerate the lawn for overseeding without destroying my lawn. I'd also like a tool that can help me aerate heavily or loosen the hard soil for reseeding without root tilling. I have a dethather, small spike aerator, small core aerator, and 5ft tiller. Borrowed my neightbors chain harrow drag, which barely scratched the surface. Would consider a disc, but My kubota will only lift 550 lbs for a disc.

Suggestions, recommendations?

I've been getting more into simplicity tractors the past few years, and have discovered an implement call a revitalizer. Imagine a tiller with straight tines that cut slits in sod rather than curved tines that turn the soil. For lack of a better solution, I'm inclined to remove all the c-tines from my tiller, design some straight or wedge shaped times to make a heavy duty revitalizer. Has anyone else ever tried this or an alternative?

Found some interesting aerator no till designs for really large tractors, but nothing for a compact tractor.

Thanks all,
BigCharlieC

Have you watched videos over at Everything Attachments? Soil Pulverizers for Tractors is the tool I would use on the cheap.

I have seen this tool on compact tractor using the PTO. It works well in hard dry soil. AERA-vator

I don't know if this is an option for you or not but here goes...
I overseed my yard with an old John Deere Van Brunt grain drill...
They will not aerate your yard but they will slit your lawn with spring loaded discs...
I have found that those old drills do a great job at oversseding and also opening up your soil while not tearing up an existing lawn...
Literally hundreds of thousands were made and parts are still available...

First off, please add your Kubota model to your profile, so we know precisely what tractor you have.

It seems you need some type of subsoiler. Are the hard areas slow to drain after heavy rain?

Subsoilers require quite a bit of tractor weight and horsepower to pull the implement deep through hard soil and whatever is below the hard soil.

Moist soil is much easier to subsoil than dry soil.

Use Roundup or generic glycophosphate to kill the wire grass. Two weeks after spraying use a single shank subsoiler or a Field Cultivator to loosen the soil. The choice between the two will depend on how hard your soil is and your tractors ability to pull one or multiple shanks through the ground. Shanks are easily removed from a Field Culivator. Field Cultivator will be somewhat less disruptive to soil surface than a simple subsoiler.

If you decide on a single shank subsoiler be sure to purchase one with shear bolt protection.

After subsoiling you may want to use your PTO powered tiller to work the top 6" of soil before seeding.

Be smart, have your soil tested and amend before seeding.
