Ok, so I would love to buy a 3 pt tiller but I really would only use it maybe 10 days a year for my own use.

I have a rental place less than a mile away so I went in and asked:

"Do you have a 3 pt tiller to rent?"

"Yes we do, do you need a tractor with it?"

"No, I have two thank you"

"It rents for $85 per day"

I almost said, Did you hear that I have my own tractor. But instead I said "I'll have to think about it" as I said good bye and walked out as fast as I could with my shirt and pants still on...

Am I crazy? Is this reasonable?

I could surely pay for one quickly, (2 years) at this rental fee.

Has anyone else priced out a 3 pt tiller rental?

I would say thats cheap, was their a deposit required for damaged tines?

A tiller could be destroyed in a day if used irresponsibly.

I would say rent it and see how much you get done and then ask yourself if it was worth it.

85 sounds pretty good to me too. I figured it would be in the 100-125 range. I agree with rdln too rent it and see how much or well it works for you.
If you are gonna use it that little, maybe a walk behind would be the ticket for a purchase.
But if you figure 850, a year in three years you would have paid for one. Another point is rental equipment is not always up to par.

Another way to look at it is, if you bought one, used it for 10 days, then sold it it, how much would you be out? $850? I don't think so. If you look for a good deal and can swing the cash for a month (or time your credit card purchase), buying-using-then selling this kind of equipment is almost always a better deal than renting. As we've seen on this board lately, slightly used equipment of this type is usually sold for not much under new.

Now, renting is apparently a good bit cheaper where you are, but for me I had two days worth of wood splitting to do and it cost me $250 to rent. I could have paid $1000 for a wood splitter, used it at my convience for a week or two, then sold it and still done better than that. Learn something new every day.

Seem like a good price to me also. To rent a Kubota L3130 is about $275.00 for a eight hour day here in Central Michigan.

I rented a tiller 2 years ago, so I'm sure the prices have increased since then. At that time it was $80 per day or $50 for a half day.

Let me put it this way..... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I wouldn't turn MY tiller loose with someone I didn't know, to use it in conditions I didn't know about, for any $85 a day.... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

With potential damage, labor to service/clean the rental tiller, the somewhat limited market for one, I'd say that it isn't going to make the rental mart into a fortune 500 company. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif They are in business to turn a profit, but in my honest opinion, they aren't making a big profit on that tiller, unless it's around for a few years. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A friend of mine runs a rental store. He gets $95 a day for a 5' Woods tiller. It's been on line for about 3 years. Last I talked to him about it, there was no plans to add a second tiller....His words were "marginally worthwhile". /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The local rental yard near my home wants $175 per day to rent a 60 in 3pt tiller. That's without a tractor. The counter guy told me it was in high demand too, so I better reserve it. Well, I sure did'nt rent it at that price. Also, the tiller is parked right next to the fence up by the road. I drove by all last summer and it never moved once. Maybe if they had a reasonable price, someone would actually rent the thing. They're surely not making any profit with it just sitting there. Go figure.

Thats not a bad price, Think about it. Even for the cheaper TSC tiller, You would have to rent for 17 years to break even on buying a new tiller.

At $85 a day and 10 days a year, buying a new one would cover itself in about 2 years depending on the quality of tiller you get. I just bought a 60" Woods tiller during my dealer's open house for $1,295. So far I have had about 5 or 6 people ask about tilling a garden (some have offered to pay and others well you know). I'll probably just till my own garden and then use it for a few other projects I have lined up.
