I'm looking for a tiller for my JD X485. I've done a little research on the JD tillers, but would like to learn more about any alternative units available. Has anyone adapted another brand, or know does anyone know of another make that might bolt up directly?

On a side question, I wasn't able to figure out what the difference was between the 30-inch mechanical and the 42-inch hydraulic. Any clarity on this would be appreciated as well...

Cheers!
Johnny

The "mechanical" tillers are PTO driven. Any Cat 1, 540 RPM tiller rated for 15 - 22 HP will work with your X485. Look at King Kutter's XB tiller. It is a good value and has received lots of praise. The equivalent JD is the Model 450 that sells for a lot more.

However, if you do not have rear PTO on your X485 (it was optional on that model, wasn't it?), the 42" Hydraulic might be a good choice. It connects a hydraulic pump to the mid-PTO -- same place as your mower deck -- and runs the tines hydraulically. It is quite a bit more expensive, but does not require you to add rear PTO.

I shouldn't be sharing all this knowledge. I've been shopping for a good used 42 hydro for months.

Johnny,

I believe you could run the Frontier line of tillers with your tractor also. They make an Economy model which is good for us that do not use a tiller that often. They are plenty well made. That way, you could use an I match limited Cat one hitch and quickly attach the tiller. Just be sure no matter what you choose that it fits to a limited Cat one, rather than a Cat one, hitch.

What is the difference between a JD 455 and the JD 485?

One has a higher number...

You earned that one, Larry!

X485 is gas engine and newer than 455. the X495 is the same tractor as the X485, but with the 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel like the 455. X585 and X595 are the same as the X4x5, but with 4WD.

One caveat though. In the newest line-up, the X5x5 model number was retained, but the specs were drawn down. An X595 from a couple years ago was the absolute top of the line. Now it is a mid-range tractor in terms of features and capacity.

Any of the X's are rare to find on the used market, and if you do, their prices are relatively high.

I had a x475 that was 23 hp and liquid cooled. I think the x485 was 25hp and I know it was fuel injected. JC
