Is anyone running a tiller on a ck30? I want to order one and am not quite sure of the proper size. The 5 foot King Kutter gear model lists 25-40 PTO required...which is right on the edge. I also wonder if the actual tilling width would cover the 62 inch outside to outside wheel width.

Another possibility is the 4 foot KK ....it is offset to cover one wheel track, but I don't know how much.

I understand tillers need a lot of power, but the CK30 has no shortage of that!

The 5' King Kutter will be fine. The CK 30 will run it.
I had my 5' KK tiller before I got My DK 35. It is to narrow to cover the tracks on my DK, so I just pin my 3 point sway bars so the 3 point is running slightly offset to one side.
This way my tiller will cover the tracks on one side without needing to purchase a new tiller.
Works for me..

I bought kioti's 65 inch tiller. I run it on my CK30 HST. it runs it just fine. no problems. and it covers the tracks. the 59 inch one would not.

about all I can say about mine is SWEET.
if you have the gear version tractor it may not run it quite as well but not sure. Mark

Mark,

How much does the Kioti tiller cost? Having something that covers both tire tracks would be nice.

Keep in mind that the throw from the tiller will usually be wider than the actual width of the cut. I use a 52" tiller on my CK20 and it really throws the dirt wide behind me, well covering the tracks.
I see no reason you couldn't use a 60" tiller with great results.
The CK30 has plenty enough power to turn that and more, but just be careful in the really hard, compacted stuff like dried clay soils. The engine will let you know if you're trying too hard.

As I read the forums I have found one concern. Some say a gear model tractor without creeper (like mt ck30) will go too fast for a tiller even in the lowest gear.

The 30 has lowest speed 0.9 MPH at 2600 rpm. I can't imagine that being too fast!

If the soil is compacted or hard to till can't I just do multiple passes if low gear is too fast? I do that with my old Gravey walk behind.

I've read that a lot of people do just that. Sometimes, just playing with the adjustment of depth can also help a lot. Some have posted that they're added weight. I think, for most users, 1 MPH will work.

John,
Seems to me there would be little penalty in time for multiple passes since you are going faster. I know some of the commercial tillers have multi speed gearboxes to help, but after looking at the torque curves of diesel engines multi passes and perhaps a little lower rpm ought to do the job. Still, perhaps I ought to open a thread in the attachment section before spending $1500+. Don't want to wait long though, it is about time to plant fall grass here.

Since I'm usually doing most of my tractor work for me, I've never paid much attention to how long it takes me to do a task. If multiple passes were necessary for me to do a job, I'd just look at it as extra seat time and fun.
I get a real kick out of tilling anyway, fascinated by watching those tines just tear it up, and how nice a job is done when I'm finished.

I don't know what the lowest speed at the rated 540 PTO speed is on a JD 4600 gear, but in my heavy clay soil it was indeed way too fast for my 72" tiller. I'd have to constantly hit the clutch and let the engine speed back up or it would die. I'm thinking that the JD4600 tractor has around 40 PTO hp (considerably more than the CK30), and it wasn't even close to being able to make a pass with my tiller unless I raised the tiller to where I was only cutting about 3" each pass. If you have anything larger than a 60" tiller with a 20 something PTO hp gear tractor, I'd guess that you will be considerably underpowered for the tiller unless you have hydro or a good low creeper gear. Otherwise, you will certainly have to make multiple passes to get any depth.
