Tifton 9 ?

Guys -

I put 5.5 acres into Tifton 9 pasture, three and a half weeks ago - Temps have been in the 70's and now upper 70's in FL. Had 2.5" of timely rains.

I went out today and saw only a few and I mean few shoots up.

I can't find any specs that say how long it should take to come up - Does anyone Know?

I did the soil test, added appropriate lime - Am wait to Fert when the shoots come up.

Secondly, I hear people say your first year may not produce much - Does it get better the 2nd year by spreading by itself or does the previous year's seed start producing or ????

Tifton 9 really likes it a little warmer during the daytime and 70's at night....... sounds like the seed is still dormant, but once it stays in the 70's at night along with some rain it will do fine. Don't expect as much growth the first year, but the following year or it will really start to take off.

I'm about in the same boat as you only a little less time w/seed in the ground. My seed has partially germinated.

The bahia grasses love hot temps and the night time temps are most critical....above 70 for any growth. I'm not expecting much from it until the first of May around here and then it will take off and I'll hit it with fertilizer.

I'd be interested in comparing notes with you as the season goes along. I'm planning to get one cutting of hay off it this year and if real lucky, maybe even two.
