I'm just double checkin' before hand....I read something about Teflon tape bein' a no no...the stuff I bought is in liquid form but contains Teflon....I just need to make sure it's okay to use....I did ask the hydraulic supply for something to put on the pipe thread fittings..."O" rings are used on the other parts...I bought two new "O" rings for the tractor connection side housing... just makin' certain there are no leaks....that's about all I need to know....Thanks in advance....take care....Ampa <>:)

I know people will not agree, tape works also. IF YOU KNOW HOW to put tape on and leave first thread showing with out tape, how are all these people getting the tape in the hydraulic system????? The compound should work just fine, of course if compound does not end up in hydraulic fluid.

I learned that teflon won't hold up to hydraulic fluid, I used the tape and it ate it apart. I talked with a hydraulic repair shop and a few others, now I use permatex and have never had an issue. You do need to be carefull and just apply on threads.

All of my tractor fittings are done with teflon tape - existing, that is. I asked the guy at the hydraulic supply shop counter if fittings were supposed to be just like NPT water plumbing (teflon tape on the male threads, then hand tight + 1 turn) - he said yes.

I'm very interested in this discussion, since I will be putting my new system together this weekend and next. I was planning on using plain 'ole teflon tape, but it there is something better, I'd like to hear it. I've not had great luck with just pipe dope, however. I've never had a leak with just tape, and now I usually use both tape (M) and dope (F) on NPT fittings for water.

Teflon tape, occasionally will swell, causing weak castings to crack. Teflon paste doesn't seem to do this. Loctite 545 hydraulic/pneumatic sealant works real well, locks parts in place, and won't contaminate systems.

You are supposed to use a paste, NOT tape on hydraulic fittings. A PTFE based past is best like Loctite #565 or Permatex 80632. DHH also sells a off-brand.

......Teflon Tape in Hyd Systems makes lots of trouble......why would anybody chance it with the cost of repairs/troubleshooting.....(although great for the Hyd Shop).......Is Teflon Tape Better?.....No.....Pipe fittings are interference fit , the tape or paste is only a lubricant to minimize galling .....Ever notice when you use pipe threads over and over again they seam to leak, Pipe Threads were never meant to be used more than once......

Years ago at a Motion Industries Hydraulic Seminar the instructor mentioned in Alabama at the main headquarters they used to sell Teflon Tape cheap and snicker when someone bought it......

Unfortunately, it does not matter what you say, or that you are and expert in this field...others will still argue that it's fine to use tape and that by leaving the first thread or two tapeless is the answer.

One problem I think is the proper paste is expensive, and people see the .97 cent tape at Home Cheapot and succumb to frugality. As you know-nothing is cheap when it comes to hydraulics except O-rings and advice here on TBN.

Thanks for the backup;)

Teflon tape can clog filters and do other damage in close tolerance components. I had one bad experience many years back and will not use it again. Kennyd has it right.
