I have a 40 acre property and a brush hog for heavy work with a Kubota L4600, to be replaced at some point in the future with something like a MF4707.

Normal residential big box lawn tractors are a waste of money where I mow. My L4600 and brush hog are simply too long and tall to mow everything, not to mention scalping and tire tracks around the house and barns.

I have a line on a Grasshopper 928D with a 72" deck for about a third, or less, of what a B-series Kubota would cost me in similar condition.

Both would get under trees, in corrals, barns, etc with minimal fuss. Both would mow around the house with much less stress and with less fear of hurling stuff in the house, vehicles, etc.

The little tractor would have more utility pulling small trailers with fencing supplies, running a chipper, etc with a much higher initial acquisition cost. A zero-turn mower sure would be nice mowing the orchard, around the house, etc.

Will the Grasshopper hold up to this type of use? It seems pretty heavily build but, 28HP and 6' of deck seems a little underpowered if your not on a golf green.

Thoughts? Pro's and Con's? Am I overlooking something obvious?

TIA,
Sid

28HP 3-cylinder Kubota diesel with 230 hours.

A Grasshopper is built like a tank and will mow circles around a B Kubota. My Grasshopper has 2400 hours and is still cutting grass. Premium mowers are a completely different animal as a box store mower. My Grasshopper is a 72” with a 28hp Kubota. It’s got plenty of power. The limiting factor is how fast it can discharge the grass. If you’re pushing hard in thick grass it’ll choke the deck and the cut quality goes to crap. More power would only be wasted.

I'd say get it.

Probably the same 28HP 3-cylinder Kubota diesel that is in my Toro. Plenty of power for this 6' recycler deck:

If you have a bunch of mowing to do, the grasshopper will mow circles around the tractor.

We are die hard Grasshopper enthusiasts! Get the 928D. We have one of those as well as two 721D's. The front mounted deck provides great stability and allows for you to cut/trim under bushes and eliminate trimming. The 928 has plenty of power and it produces a fantastic cut. You won't be disappointed! As others have said, it's a tank. After a few hours of mowing with it, you will never want to mow with anything else. I promise you that!

Definitely the GH. Also, you can get a rear hitch for GH's for pulling carts, trailers, spreaders, sprayers... you get the picture.
