If you live in California, Delaware, Maryland, New York or Pennsylvania you can no longer buy a regular old gasoline or diesel 5 gal can.
In these states they have to be compliant to the California Air Resource Board regulations.
These new cans are ventless with a pain in the butt spring loaded, shelf closing valve for the spout that has a hook that has to engage on your tractors filler neck so you can pour fuel.
I think these cans are ridiculous and here in PA. you can no longer buy the old type, I checked four or five stores.
And why do these four states on the right coast have to adopt California's regulations?
There, I now feel better. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

i hear you my fellow SEPA'er, i went through the same thing last year. there IS one simple solution. hop over the bridge to NJ, get yourself a gas can, pay the 3 bucks to come back across the bridge, and you are done!

I work in the emissions controls for one of the big three (two?).

The federal government has allowed CA to come up with it's own emissions standards. They (the feds) also have there set of emissions standards. They did not want to allow each state to set it's own set of rules (two is enough... one would be better), so they allowed other states to adopt CAs rules.

BTY, those rules (and two sets of rules) add over 5K to each vehicle and climbing. It's fun work for EEs like me that also are 'gear heads'....

At least PA has only adopted SOME of our restrictive regulations.

Let me ask you this. Did you spill more or less fuel with the new no emission CARB fuel cans? I'm with you that they just don't work.

The next time I leave California, I'm going to be tempted to buy a few of the old style fuel cans.

I bought one of the carb cans, and on the large neck of the tractor fuel tank on top of the hood, plus balancing the weight and an akward reach, those cans just don't make it so I don't use it.

Hi
Same thing in Missouri with the ventless cans. I just drilled a hole in the top of the can and used a small wooden plug cut from a tree twig, problem solved for me. A country boy can survive

About 97% of all the emissions were cured with a $2.00 positive crankcase ventilation valve in the 1960's. The last 3% is what they have been chasing for the last 30 years at great costs. What is even more ridiculous is the fact that the worlds fastest growing industrial economy isn't even thinking about pollution or the environment and we are supporting it almost 100%.... CHINA!!!! If our industries didn't have to comply with both Federal & State regulations our products could be produced much more economically..

The last can I bought was about 2 months ago, here in florida.. and it was one of those new ventless cans with the hook jobs on it as well... Looks like it is something that is going to slowly spread...
