The process starts on it's own. That's just a light so you know the regen is going on. Once it finishes, the light goes away.

The buttons are there for when you want to cancel the regen if you're working on highly inflamable stuff like hay, straw and so on. Since the DPF is getting cleaned, it can throw some really hot particles out of the exhaust, which is a bad combination with straw.
