I'm working on a Ford 5000 tractor that's about a 1969 to a 1970 model. I had to weld a nut onto the check plug on the rear in order to remove it and check the level of the hydraulic fluid. I had to add almost five gallons, there is no telling how long it had been since it was checked or changed, it looked like mud. The lift began giving us a little trouble prior to this, it would only raise when the tractor was hot. usually after running it for an hour or so. After seeing the condition of the fluid I felt a complete service was in order. I went as far as to wash it out with a mixture of alcohol and Dexron transmission fluid before adding new oil. I used the front end loader of another tractor to roll it back and forth to agitate the mixture inside the transmission case. We replaced the fluid with all new fluid, in the back and the front. I still have the problem with the lift. Any suggestions? I'm sure I will have to split the tractor and go into the rock house, something I've never done before, but I'm not scared of it. I don't know much about hydraulics and any information or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance for your time! ~ Charles

You don't have to split the tractor, take seat off to remove rockshaft cover then you can get to pto and main pump

not sure if this applies to ford, but sometimes the pads will come off of brake disc and will look like mud in hyd oil

Thanks! Speaking of brakes, one of the reasons I'm tearing into the tractor is that the brakes are shot. When I first topped off the hydraulic fluid, about 2 to 3 gallons leaked back out the brake rod seals in the axle housings, they were over extended. When I replaced the rubbers, they broke again within a few weeks. The rubber seals were inverted because there is no lining left on the brakes. Without a doubt, the axle housings will be coming off for a brake job. Keeping in mind the lift isn't working, I'm also planning on taking the rock house off and replacing all the o rings and such. The reason I'm thinking the tractor will have to be split, is because in my repair manual, the hydraulic sump filter is inside between the final drive and the transmission. Suggestions? I'm still hoping someone can tell me what to look for to fix the lift. Is it a valve stuck or what? Thanks in advance for your time!

The sump filter will come out with the rockshaft cover. What does the hyd filter look like? If it fails, that "mud" will circulate through the whole system.

You do not need to split the tractor to get to the filters, this is what the filters look like. If your tractor has a pto shaft, that has to be removed before you can get to the filters. Its not a bad job replacing the filters and rebuilding the lift cover, Its just a bunch of orings.
