I think you'll eat up a lot of chainsaw chain before you get very far on a big root. Some time back I began paying attention to dirt around my chain saw. It's amazing how long it stays sharp when you keep it out of the dirt and it's also amazing how little dirt it takes to do a number on the teeth.
The trencher teeth are huge compared to a chain saw and it has the power and weight to chew through. Of course, like Frank said some roots will be so hard that the trencher may not phase them either. How 'bout a good old fashioned axe?
