thickest root cut by a walk behind trencher?

What is the thickest root the tyipcal walk behind trencher will cut through? Thanks.

Just had one last weekend for a short trench. Cool machine. I didn't hit any roots but it did break a couple of rocks. I suspect it could gnaw through a root as thick as the entire blade if you've got the time /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks. I guess I'll try the disposable chainsaw bar and blade first. Then go with more expensive methods such as rentals.

kind of depends on the type of root, some will just chew up and others will be more difficult.

I think you'll eat up a lot of chainsaw chain before you get very far on a big root. Some time back I began paying attention to dirt around my chain saw. It's amazing how long it stays sharp when you keep it out of the dirt and it's also amazing how little dirt it takes to do a number on the teeth.

The trencher teeth are huge compared to a chain saw and it has the power and weight to chew through. Of course, like Frank said some roots will be so hard that the trencher may not phase them either. How 'bout a good old fashioned axe?
