I am trying to install a Thermostart on my 4500 Ford three cylinder diesel. There is no pre-threaded a spot on my intake manifold. Do I need to drill it out and tap a half inch thread therefore the Thermostart any information would be very helpful TIA.

The thermostart unit is not 1/2 inch thread. Does the manifold have a blank spot with the swell in the casting intended for machining? If not the wall won't be thick enough or strong enough to support what is required.

Yes, it does have a swell kind of flat spot round at first I thought it was a nut or bolt but it’s just a swell Thanks I’m waiting to get a Thermostart to see what the thread is. Don’t know where I got the half inch idea. I will take a picture tomorrow. Thanks again.

My intake manifold is exactly how described I don’t have to drill a hole. I will pull that plug out and probably do like you were thinking just get a separate canister.
The other way you can do it is like the later systems were done by T ing into the fuel return line level with the top of the fuel tank so that fuel returning to the tank can also travel down to the cold start.

Thats how my 3910 is plumbed. But the thermostart element is also a valve. It opens when heated. There's also a separate point on the ignition switch too. It's just before the Start so you have to release the start and turn it back one position. I've wired the air cleaner light to also indicate when the thermostart is on as a reminder.

The red dash light looks like this.
