Got a good solid 7 hours in on 955 project I bought. For the first time since I bought it... and who know how long before that... the 955 finally has a transmission in it. I have a few more things to button up before I pour oil in it and fire it up. The radiator support and it's two uprights are kind of tweaked, so I decided to address this now since I have the oil cooler off. No sense in filling the system only to have to open it back up later to fix the rad support. I'm going to have to replace both the uprights with the ones off my 855 parts donor. There is some straightening needed to the radiator support and little welding as well.

I got the driveshaft back in it too. Man what a chore. That driveshaft could be 3/8" to 1/2" shorter and still have full spline engagement at the transmission. I have another d-shaft laying around and I'm going to shorten it by about 1/2". If I ever have to take the d-shaft back out for any reason, it is coming out via sawzall and getting replaced with the shorter one. Getting very close.... I'd say just a couple more days before I fire it up and see if it'll move under it's own power for the first time in who know how long....

Sorry, was in a groove and too busy getting stuff done today to take the time to snap pics. I'll get some pics of the mangled radiator support before I cut it apart and rework it.

Yes I did. When I picked it up from the seller, he told me he had gotten a call from someone in North Dakota... I guess that would be you.

Well, I don't know just picture worthy this project it going to be. I am not restoring it to parade condition. I'm just puitting together a worker.

I'm not sure I'd play with the length of the drive shaft. They're designed for expansion and contraction over varying temps.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with this logic. The driveshaft is mechanically fastened at both ends.... yoke clamped at transmission and engine end bolted to the rubber isolator on the flywheel. So, any and all expansion or contraction is going to be taken up in the rubber isolator. Further, the coefficient of thermal expansion for steel is 0.00000645in per inch per degree F. So even if the driveshaft were experience a totally absurd and unrealistic 1000F difference in temperature, the total difference in expansion/contraction for a d-shaft 1/2" shorter would be 0.003225 inches. That would be easily taken up by the rubber isolator.

Since actual temperature difference would be much less than 1000 F, the total change of length would be much less. I just can't see a 1/2" making any significant difference.
