In responding to a post in another forum here, I mentioned that my property is located on a section of the old Lincoln Highway here. My office happens to be on another section of it. I just wondered if any other TBN'ers lived or worked along a part of it?

For those of you who don't know, the Lincoln highway was the first transcontinental highway for automobiles in America. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It winds it's way from New York to San Francisco through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada and California. It's really a great bit of American history right at the end of my drive. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Is that Highway 33 Gary? If so, it runs right through South Bend and is named Lincolnway in some sections.

Another neat historical road near us is US40, the National Road in central Indiana. Lots of early American architecture still intact all along the way. Plus, there is Webb's Antique Mall in Centerville. We try to get there at least once a year on our various jaunts /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It goes right through my town of Newcastle CA. Most of it is still the original concrete. It get's little use today as I-80 has pretty much relieved it of it's duties. There are still many signs with the Lincoln Highway insignia on it.

The Lincoln Highway in my part of PA is called Rt 30. As it passes through York, PA, it's called Market Street. There were 2 drag strips here in York, the offical one (no longer in existence) called the US30 Dragway. The unoffical strip was a big regtangle that included Market Street (one way east) as one 'strip' and Philadelphia Street (one way west) as the other 'strip'...or so I've heard. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We used to live in the town of Malta, IL...just a few miles west of DeKalb on Rt 38. There is a sign on the property of Kishwaukee College with a historical marker indicating "seedling mile" for the original Lincoln Highway. The seedling miles were the very first paved sections of the highway, and were located way out in the middle of the country, and were actually used to promote support for the complete construction plan. Rt. 38 follows the path of L.H. (and is still locally called L.H.) It then jogs over to Rt 30 (the majority of L.H. used to be Rt 30...see we site below) and heads over to Garys part of the planet.

I've been on that road /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Still wonder though; I never heard of an old Castle over there, much less a new one /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"I never heard of an old Castle over there, much less a new one"

That's because you've never been to my old place.

I've yet to see a Shingle with a Spring.

Gold Country sits on Highway 40, the Lincoln Highway.

I think it was US30 around here. US30 runs more straight west from Fort Wayne across Indiana. The original plans called for it to go up through South Bend on what is now US20. That is why US20 is still called Lincolnway or Lincoln Highway in many cities in Northern Indiana. US30 was a straighter route. Maybe US33 from Fort Wayne to South Bend was originally part of it, but I don't know for sure. But from South Bend west it was on US20 originally.

Here's an interesting link to some history of it.

Originally it went through South Bend but later bypassed it to the south.

Here's a picture of the Lincoln Highway bridge at Donner Lake, CA, very close to where the Donner Party was situated for a winter. I have been over this bridge many times. It is the old highway 40 that was replaced by I-80. It was built in 1925
