Many schools in this neck of the woods have a "drive your tractor to school day".. unfortunately, this one was tragic, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family:

Heard of a few schools in the southern tier doing this also on the radio in the am today.

You can kiss that tradition goodby.

Actually, I thought it was a bad idea. That is very hilly country and most of those old tractors barely have brakes. The kid in the trailer was injured too and the ATV was hit, but the driver not injured.

A bad deal all around. Was anyone involved in the accident legal though ?

But the way troopers explain state traffic laws, it appears the vehicles shouldn't have been on an open roadway. State police said the drivers of the tractor and the all-terrain vehicle did not have drivers licenses. The driver of the tractor had a drivers permit, but that would allow him to drive the tractor only with a licensed passenger and only on a farm or for a farm purpose, troopers said.

State law generally does not allow tractors and other farm vehicles on roadways, but there are some exceptions, according to Trooper James Simpson, Troop D public information officer.

"In a case like this, where it's not being used for agricultural purposes, those exemptions disappear," Simpson said.

Wow this is news to me. I thought a kid with his dads tractor had the right to be on the road. I did not know you needed a license to drive a tractor on the road. And this particular kid did have the right except he wasn't using it for farm purposes. But he did have a wagon attached, he could have been going to get hay??,, And if this rule has been around why is the bring your tractor to school day an annual event. Now the ATV did not have the right to be on the road.

This whole thing is goofy and something tells me next year there won't be a bring your tractor to school day. Where was the police all the years before??

My take on the issue is that the 'bring your tractor to school' should be classified as a bona-fied ag event by the police.

I don't think that is splitting hairs either.... If I use my tractor for ag purposes, and i run it down the road to the filling station to get gas.. i feel that is an ag purpose.

If I'm studying ag in school, and / or there is an even at school that requires a tractor.. that seems to qualify as well.

Yes. It is political correctness to avoid placing blame on someone or the school.

I could digress about what vehicle should not have been at this place on the road but that would serve no purpose in this unfortunate event. And I do not have the facts, anyway.

Learning about agriculture came to mind.....

Operate a tractor with a "licensed passenger".....

Hello? No one else caught this?
