I am in the market for a JD 910 or 920 ztr. I am leaning toward the JD because I will need to trade in a x320 with about 55hrs, and the local exmark and ferris dealers will not take a trade. I really don't want the hassle of having to sell as long as I get a fair trade-in from the local JD dealer.

I will mostly be cutting my 1 acre yard, and I plan on cutting roughly 3-5 hours per week on the side to help make the payments on the new ZTR.

I am considering the following models; all have the kawasaki engine and 52/54 deck. I am curious as to whether or not the suspension on the Ferris will make much of a difference compared to the exmark and JD. Which would you choose and why???

1. JD 910 or 920
2. eXmark Lazer Z
3. Ferris IS1500

Thanks, guys!!!

sorry, just came accross this thread. i just bought a 910A about 2 weeks ago. in short, it's one of the smartest purchases i've ever made! i'd been fooling around with Murray's, one Snapper(boy have they fallen from grace compared to the Snappers of old), a JD z225 that was a good homeowner mower but i wanted something more. i went shopping, determined not to let price decide what i bought, although i did set a limit of $8K. the closest dealers to me were Hustler, Exmark, Deere, and Dixie Chopper. i started off at Hustler. looked at a mini Z with a 19hp Kawasaki engine and 52" deck. nice mower! i was very interested! they had it on sale and the guy even knocked off $500 before i said a word, he wanted it gone. price was around $6,400. problem was he only wanted to give me $400 for my 3 year old JD z225 with only 18 hours on it. that combined with the poor financing deals they had going on, and i just couldn't do it. so i continued on my journey. went to Exmark. sat on a lazer z with 48" and 52" deck, both had 21hp Kawasakis on them(i think, can't remember exact hp numbers but its close.) these mowers could also be had in Kholers for $800 more but i wasn't interested in a Kholer anyways. Trade in was only $500 and they financed through the same companies as Hustler. Exmark was a little pricey too at $7200, but had the trade in been at least $1,000 i would have bought it. same with Hustler. i told them if they would offer me 1k, the sale was theirs. neither would bite. oh well. went to the Jd dealer i do alot of business with. sat on a 910A with a 54" deck and 22hp Kawasaki motor(FX model which i'm told is their top of the line commercial engine). liked it alot! salesman said he would give me $1,500 for my mower and that was that. price was $7,200, minus the $1,500 and financed for 36months at 1.9% interest. JD wasn't my first choice, but made the most sense. glad i bought it though. it's a cutting machine! my friend who owns a commercial moweing business said it was an excellent mower, a big step up from their 800 series flop. from others who have bought the 900 series i have yet to read anything but praises from them.

i never bothered to look at Dixie Choppers. i think the 3 youre looking at are great mowers, but it's really about the deal you can get. Deere will give you the most for your trade i suspect.

I kind of disagree that it's really about the deal you get. I bought the Hustler super Z with the front wheel suspension and it's just the best. I compared it to a deere unit running on the same ground and could easily mow twice as fast with the Hustler. I went shopping determined to buy the Deere but the Hustler was hands down the best unit. I would guess you'd have the same results with any suspension ZTR. I paid in the 8k range for my unit. I mow our church yard with a person that has the biggest diesel Deere ZTR unit and I easily mow 50% more than he does because of the suspension. While I like to get a good deal if I can mow 50% more and pay 10% more for the unit I'll take the productivity every time.

you're right. i think i said that wrong. the 910A was NOT my first choice of mower out of the 3, it acctually came in 3rd. Exmark was 1 and Hustler a very close 2. i just couldn't let my mower go for $400-500. no way. that, combined with 5.9% financing compared to 1.9% was another factor, as was being able to keep my "home service" with Deere. the Deere mower is quite comfortable riding without the suspension, although i must admit that i've never ridden a mower that had it. might feel like a bucking bronco after i tried one out i'm sure, but it does ride nice. the seat on all 3 is VERY comfortable. like i said, had Exmark and Hustler at least met me halfway and threw more $$ at my trade-in i would own one of those today. i even told them that. i could have sold my Z225 myself, but what a pain in the neck that is.

910A with a 54" deck and 22hp Kawasaki motor Deere will give you the most for your trade i suspect.

Rollie:

How well does that machine pull the 54" deck? My dealer had a 920A with a 54" deck they let me use for a few days. I loved that mower but it was a few hundred over budget for me. The only thing that kept me from pulling the trigger on the 910A with 54" deck was that I did get into some grass with the 920A (well...mostly grass with leaves left over from last year), that pulled it down some.

Never compared brands though since there is enough selection with-in the Deere line to keep me busy. :D

Now that we are in to some summer grass growth, can you please let me know how you think the 910A is handling the 54" cut?
Thanks,

Tim

The new 900 series JD's are good mowers. I would strongly consider one.

I plan to get one John M, just have some unanswered questions. I guess what I am needing to know is can anyone tell me if they have found the 54" deck to be too much for the 22 hp Kawasaki found in the Z910? My dealer tells me he doesn't THINK it will be a problem but hasn't sold one set up like that. (He did mention the 810 had alot of problems with that....which GOT ME TO THINKING).

Anyone here own one and can give me first hand experience, please let me know.

i, like you, had some reservations about a 22hp motor and 54" deck. what i was told, and read on lawnsite.com was that Kawasaki rebuilt these engines for Deere and now have more tourqe compared to the problematic 800 series. also the hydro pump motors were changed and are mere responsive, smoother, and don't rob as near as much power as the old Parker's did. i have only bogged the mower in magnolia leaves that accumulated since last year. it was only a slight bog, never came close to choking the engine down, but i did slow down ever so slightly to let the mower catch up as i wanted to disperse the leaves as best i could. other then that, i have not seen any instance that led me to believe the 54" deck was too much for the 22hp motor. you also get the bigger tires with the 54" deck and that makes the ride that much better. i say pull the trigger and get it! you wont be sorry! i paid $7200 for mine so that should give you a ball park figure.
