Any body have any advice on putting electric starters on Tecumseh motors? I have a HM100 on a generator and a HM80 on a Troy Bilt roto-tiller. They both have places for a starter and the Troy-bilt even has a battery and igintion switch(We bought the tiller at an auction) but no starter. I recently called a local Tecumseh dealer/service tech and he gave me a quote of $270 just for the generator. That just doesn't sound right. Am I missing something here. Why do they give the option of putting starters on these things yet with very limited and/or no information as to how to do it. What exactly is the whole process of putting electric starters on these things and what other parts would I need.

thanks,
Steve

Since I haven't gotten any replies yet I figured some pictures might help explain what I'm talking about. I have found some starters on ebay for $50 or so that will fit the HM80 and HM100 but is this all I need besides a battery, solenoid, ignition switch, and the wiring? And how can I tell if my flywheel will match up to these starters? Once again, any and I do mean any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Steve

Ok Paul..I thought others would of replied but??
Anyhow.I can't see any teeth on the flywheels in your pictures. But If they are there than a starter for that make and model engine will work. All you need is a battery, say a #6 wire from batt pos.to solenoid.then a #6 wire from solenoid to starter.and a #6 wire from batt neg.to ground.(motor mount bolt or the like) You don't need a ign. switch but most anytype switch to turn on and off the solenoid.(must do normal starting prcedure anyhow,is there a switch or key to run or stop the engine now)
(momentary on switch works best)(push in for on let go for off).
How you charge the battery is a different story but some generators have a 12V charging output.
hope this helps.

that looks just like my snow blower motor, it has a 110v starter bolted up in that spot.
