I need to weld about 3" length of 1" OD DOM tube to a flat piece of steel using MIG/GMAW. Both approx 1/8" thick. The contact area is very small and the V groove is quite narrow and 'deep' so I'm not sure what the right method would be. Basically like this diagram, but the plate is wider than the tube so it is harder to get to the point of contact. I've already ground a flat into the side of the tube but only a moderate one. Wondering if I should make a deeper/wider flat on the side of the tube to make that valley more accessible and less 'deep'?

Thanks,
Rob

Bend the flat plate to a closer match to the tube,,
then, it is simply a butt weld,,

I just did that today on my SIL's RFM, one of the four wheel supports broke off,,
I had done the other side last year,, so, now both front wheels are repaired.

It was just like this mower,,

I haven't broke one of the wheels on this mower,,, YET!! :D

I can't alter the flat plate. It needs to stay flat.

Could you not add a piece of angle iron?

Unless carrying a tremendous load, I don't see the problem? I'd tack it in place in 4 places. Then weld it.

Or if he is lucky and can find a C channel laying around that the pipe will lay in???

If not a tremendous load I would do what you said. No need to OVRWLD though. Maybe 3/4” -1” beads on each end both sides for a 3 inch length of tube.

Edit. I just reread and material is only 1/8 inch so I would assume light load?

Yeah, I thought of that later too. Must not be too much load.

Just weld it on, being careful to keep it aligned in the proper position.
