I had my tractor in the shop, siphoned out the #2 fuel and replaced with #1 for winter operation. Drained the hydraulic system and replaced with low temp fluid (Chevron THF 1000). Drove it out of the shop and ran it for about 10 minutes, then parked it in the shed. Shut down the engine at idle. Temp is about 15f. This afternoon I started the engine, after about 20 seconds, it started going faster and faster, finally exceeding the red line RPM with the throttle still at idle position. I shut it down with the key, then tried it again, same result. I checked the lever on the governor that moves with the throttle lever, it's moving as it should and is contacting the stop when in idle position. I am using rotella synthetic motor oi and it's at normal level. Anybody have an Idea what could cause this? I plugged in the block heater but have not tried it again.

The tractor is still under the 2 yr warranty, but I hate to haul it 50 miles if I don't have to. Dealer says he has not heard of this happening.

Thanks,
Jim Frisby

This is an unusual problem. Machine warranties are in place so qualified people can correct issues like this AND STAND BEHIND THEIR EFFORTS. There is no sense in losing an engine over this. Load it up and truck it to the dealer; let them fix it.

I plugged in the block heater all night, this morning it seems fine, I am assuming some water vapor froze the flyweights? I think I'll get the tractor warmed up enough to drive off any water that might be in the crankcase. What do you think?

I would have it checked by dealer; this could be an injection pump problem.

A friend here at work suggested that it might have had a crankcase breather stuck open and been sucking up engine oil to burn. I will check the oil level, but does anyone know if the crankcase breather plumbs into the intake manifold on these?

Make sure you don't have diesel fuel finding it's way into the crankcase.

I'd follow Rick's advice... ESPECIALLY if the machine is under warranty... however.. as an uneducated guess.. I bet you had some ice and rack problems...

good luck..

I agree with soundguy and think it could have been a chunk of ice. I have had this happen on a payloader at work. parked it in the heated garage for a little while and it went away.

I agree with dqdave that its an injector pump problem. My injector pump timing got messed up on a JD once and it ran out of control.

Hi Jim, did you ever figure out what was wrong?

My TC45DA does this also when I start it up in cold (10F) temps. I have to use the throttle to keep it from running away and once it's warm the trouble stops.
