Not my week. From blown hydraulic lines on our JD555B on a steep sidehill to the alternator acting up on our F6640, now our 2003 TC45DA's tack started acting up this morning while using the pto. Tack would not come up to 2500 to turn on green 540 light until after it ran for a while. Seems to be ok now though. Any ideas on what to look for? Is there a pickup/sensor that might be dirty? Any help would be appreciated.

Did the tach register low rpm or not at all? I sometimes have to tap the face of my instrument panel to get my tach going.

The tach pickup is in the alternator. You might remove and reconnect the wire to make sure it is not a dirty connector. You could also remove the instrument panel (two screws) and disconnect/reconnect the cable to it.

Recently, my 540 rpm light has stopped working. It self-tests itself when I first start the tractor, but it won't come on around 2600 rpm as it should. However, the red 600 light still illuminates if I overrev. Go figure. . . It's not a big thing because I know the light should come on at 2600, so I can just use the rpm as a reference.

Maybe a loose fan belt allowing slipage ?????

I guess that could be the problem, but you'd think the alternator warning light would also be blinking on/off if the belt is slipping bad enough to cause the tachometer output to fail.

Jackfr: The tachometer output comes off pin "P" on the alternator. It leaves the alternator on connector "C.5" and goes directly to the tachometer via the tractor's wiring harness. The tachometer has a separate circuit that feeds the 540 and 600 rpm lights. That's what the schematic shows. I'm referring to the schematic in the back of the Operator's Manual (Frame 1 and Frame 5), if you have an Op. Manual.

Tach was registering low rpms then it cleared itself and now seems to be working fine. I'll check the connections and the belt thanks for the input.

Checked all connections and belt everything seems ok and tach has been working fine for over a week with no problem. Just the way my luck runs when I really need it it will start acting up again. Maybe its the same problem others have talked about and its just starting with mine. I'll try tapping it if it starts acting up again. (should I use a 16 lb sledge)
