TC45D Range Selector Problem

I was using my TC45D today and noticed that the Hi - Lo range selector lever was not all the way forward where it usually is in Hi. I pushed all the way forward thinking that I may not have fully engaged it. As soon as the tractor started moving, the lever popped back 3/4 to 1 ". I checked the linkage from the lever to where it enters the transmission, and found the shaft that enters the transmission is sloppy. So far the transmission has not popped out of gear, but I expect that will be the next problem to develop.

Has anyone else had this problem? If I keep using the tractor like this will I cause additional damage to the transmission? Does anyone have a better assembly diagram than the one in New Holland's parts lookup, for this part of the transmission?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ross, is your shifter stiff as it operates? Can you feel the indent as it goes from Hi to N to Lo? From your description, it sounds like the shifter is not properly dropping into the indent. I'll check my repair manual and get back to you.

Hi Jim,

I took another look at the linkage this morning, There is no stiffness, and it is going into the detent at Hi-N-Lo positions. As best as I can tell at this point I suspect that the bushings supporting the shaft that the lingage is connected to, are worn.

Ross, the shaft from the outside is attached to a shifter fork that moves a shifting collar along a shaft. Rollpins are used to attach forks and shifters to shafts. You may have a worn rollpin and/or a bushing worn as you guessed. Unfortunately, there is no way to inspect this without splitting the tractor and removing the transmission counter-shaft above the main shaft where the shifter is located. Of course there is a top cover on the transmission and I'd be tempted to remove that for inspection before teardown, but even if you see what is the problem, it will probably take splitting the tractor to actually do the repair. If it works and goes into gear without jumping out. I think I'd just go with it.

There really isn't a better drawing in the repair manual than the IPC drawing. If you look at drawing ref. 03.06 and items 21-23, you can see the shifter, yoke, and shaft with indents. If you look at drawing ref. 03.09, items 14-16, you'll see the collar that moves along the lower shaft to change gears. That's the collar where the yoke fits from drawing ref. 03.06. Now, if you look further, you'll see a drawing ref. 03.06.01 "improved gear selector kit - range lever jump-out" That tells me that NH has had problems with some tractors and that could be the problem you are having. That drawing shows all the assemblies of the transmission on one diagram and even show rollpins (item 5). BTW: I use messicks.com for my parts lookup.

Thanks Jim for your help. In drawing ref. 03.06 item 20 is the part thats sloppy. It appears to only be supported by the bore in the transmission casing. The diagram shows no bushings for this item. This would mean that the casing is worn and the only way to repair would be to bore the hole and insert a bushing. If there's no risk of additional damage, I will just leave it until it gets bad enough to justify the work involved to repair it.
