Just bought a TC45D and need a brush hog/brush mower to prep a vinyard. I would like to buy quality equipment. I need advice for a brush cutter? Sorry about the questions but I have been deployed mostly overseas for 13 years as an Armor Officer since I was 21 and know about mine plows and 70 ton Abrams but not much about agricultural iron. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'd look at 7' mainly.. however depending on what you are cutting.. 8' might be ok.. for example.. light grass and light brush. For 'good N thick' stuff.. 7' is probably going to be a breeze.

You've got 'name' brands.. like woods, schulte, bushog, and of course the tractor oems.. like NH and JD.. kubota.. etc. Can't go wrong with any of those.

There are also many other brands.. landpride.. etc.. and economy lines.. like kodiak, Howse and KK.. those usually offer 2 grades.. economy and heavy duty. I'm currently using a HD howse 120" brush cutter behind a NH 7610s and I cut anything I can run over...

good luck!

While you have the HP to run a 7 or 8 footer, they get expensive fast. Also they are quite heavy. An 8 foot twin spindle would be the cat's meow, but $$$$$. It's hard to find a light duty 7' and the medium / heavy duty 7' are a bit too much for a compact tractor.

Long story short, for the $$$ Look at a 6 footer.

If you want to get a mower that will last, I would suggest looking at the Woods Brush Bulls. A BB720 which is their medium duty 6' cutter, will handle heavy brush. It also has a fast blade tip speed so it does a nice job cutting grass as well. The Woods decks are different from most other cutters, they have large diameter stump jumpers and short blades. They don't tend to beat holes in the deck because of this design. Also, the blades are held in by large pins and do not break as easily as the blade bolts used in other cutters.

Howse has a light duty, medium duty, medium heavy duty, and a heavy duty line.

His hp is fine for 7' or 8' Heck.. the 10' lists 55-80 hp needed... etc.

The howse products are a tad lighter than the big oem's and more expensive units.. a medium heavy.. or a hd should be fine behind a 45. Heck.. get a drag/pull style, and aleviate 90% of the weight problem altogether... and as for price.. super reasonable... but I wouldn't buy from the howse website.. it'd get it from a howse dealer.. better pricing.

KK also makes larger kutters.. and at least 2 'qualities'. I know they have 7' units.. not sure about 8'.

Kodiak is another 'medium' duty unit.. and they have at least up to 10'.. sdo 7/8 shouldn't be a problem.. and again.. price is right.. under 4k.

No reason what a 45 should be toting around the same cutter that a mid 30's hp tractor does... My NH 1920 would run a 6' cutter... might as well make use of that extra pto hp. Add some front suitcase weights if it is a 3pt models and the weight is a tad off. Or get a drag model.

If I was buying a 45 and my dealer recomended a 6' mower.. I'd find another dealer... that's almost crazytalk.. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
