Hey, fellas, I'll do a formal intro. here soon. I've been too busy "working" with my new toy, er, I mean tool.:D

I've tried neutral in everything (12x12 shuttle) but it's still HARD to get in and out of 4x4. When I finally get it to move, it engages just fine, it's the physically pushing the engage/disengage lever up and down.

Like I said, I've tried, clutch in and clutch out, HML range in neutral, 1,2,3,4 in neutral......still VERY hard.....

What am I doing wrong?

This site has been great in researching what to buy, handy projects and over-all maintenance!

Thanks,
Jeff

Sounds like it might be normal. Try these tests. Lift front wheels with loader and then try to shift into/out of 4x4. Also try moveing a few inches forward or reverse before takeing it out of 4x4. Also do not keep in 4x4 on cement or asphalt. If it works smoothly in these tests then it is probably normal.
Have fun doing your work, good luck Frank

Well, I went out this morning and it went in and out just fine.......  I even tried it a coupld of times just to be sure I wasn't a few sandwiches short of a picnic......

This thing really has some power........ I pulled some pretty good sized downed trees today and it didn't want for power.....

Thanks for your help!

yes
ours is hard too
sometimes you just have to sneak it forward and back.

Its the same way on mine,I just put a little down pressure on the loader and it pops right out

If that happens I use the loader to apply down pressure and lighten the front end to disengage 4x4.

Jeff, this is called "driveline windup" or something similar. It happens because the front wheel's revolutions don't exactly match the rear wheel's. The driveline is under torsional twisting pressure. Until this is relieved, the gearbox does not want to easily disengage. I think you will find it is always only a problem disengaging FWD. If you don't have a loader attached, you can sometimes drive slowly forward and turn left and right to relieve the windup.

Sitting overnight, your tractor's windup was released slowly. That's why it worked smoothly the next morning.

Welcome to the forum. As you know, if you have questions, this is the place to come. Lots of people are here to help.

What most of us have found is that this can be dealt with very easy with a little slow movement of the tractor and then letting off of the gas slightly so the drivetrain is unloaded. With a gear tractor, when you are already moving, I'd suggest slowing the engine RPMs (still moving) and then pushing in the clutch, and then lastly moving the 4wd lever. In this manner, you are not only unloading the drivetrain but also proving some motion to the front end which should also help.
