Hi all, just joined the forum.

Father-in-law went to use my tractor and he said the hydraulics didn't sound right (funny noise :)) So he shut it off.

Tried again yesterday, and it didn't make any noise, but the hydraulics won't work. Both 3pt & loader.

I have not tried it myself, to stinkin COLD!

Temperature is somewhere south of 0,
It worked fine for me the last time I used it, which was just a few days earlier, AND A LOT WARMER. I parked it, and the foregoing is what happened next.

Does anyone have any idea what to look for? Bad pump? stuck relief valve?

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to TBN:D

You could have water in your hydraulic fluid, and it froze. Not to uncommon for tractors stored outside, is yours?

Start it up and let it run for 15 or so minutes at a high idle and see if the it starts working again. Also check the fluid level and see if if looks milky.

Have it in an open face shed, so essentially it's outside. I'll try getting it warmed up good, and see what happens. Don't think the fluid is low, but again my FIL looked at it, but didn't say anything about it looking milky.

I was kinda wondering if something isn't frozen somewhere.

Also talked with shop, they suggested checking flow from pump and also into FEL valve for frozen/sticky part.

Thanks

How cold? How old is fluid? Filters?
Check all levels.

If all is well, let it run and warm up. Cold fluid is cranky.

DirtBoy I would put a torpedo heater on the trans for a while. It sounds like the hydraulics are froze. I would not run the tractor untill you thaw it out somehow. If the lines are frozen you could burn up the pump. After you get it thawed change the hyd. fluid and filters.

Did you try to move the tractor? The reason I ask is that the HST and hydraulic pump draw fluid from the same place in the reservoir. The fluid goes throuh a filter and then comes to a "Y" where it splits and goes to the transmission and to the main hydraulic pump. If you can move the tractor, it proves that the reservoir fluid and filter are okay. If not, then the HST and hydraulic pump are probably suffering from the same frigid oil that is probably too thick to pump properly.

Also, do you have any rear remote valves with a lever on the right fender? If a rear remote valve does not return to center, it deadheads the hydraulics and the relief valve opens. If your FIL bumped a remote lever and it stuck because of the cold, it could be causing the hydraulics to stall.

Good luck. I think warming the tractor with a heater could cure your problem. What you need is a heater you put into the reservoir dipstick hole and warm the oil before startup. If you don't do that, you are taking a chance of damaging your hydraulic pump and HST every time you start your tractor in sub-zero temperatures. New Holland recommends NH-F200 oil for low temperature applications.

Temp. -5, high of 5, but will warm up some today.

Well, I will warm it up good with a heater before trying to do much of anything else.
It has an engine heater, but that's all.
Yes, it will move, so HSD is OK.
And yes, I do have a full compliment of rear hydrulics (2 extra)
And it is also time to change fluids/filters, that is something I need to get done also, there not terribly old, hour meter says it's time!

Thanks for all your ideas, I'll find out more today, FIL is going to put a heater to blow on it today.

Well, frozen bypass valve was all it turned out to be, once we warmed it up, it worked fine.
Appreciate all your ideas.

By the way, has anyone ever heard of putting "heet" in hydraulic fluid to remove any moisture?

I was told by another farmer, that they always put a can in, running IH equip., don't know if that sounds good or not.

Glad you found your problem.

I wouldn't recommend putting "heet" or anything else in your hydraulic fluid.
