This is my first time posting on any forum.
I have a non working cruise control, on a TC40D. I checked for power at the magnet, and everything checks OK. It looks like I need to replace the magnet. Does anyone know what the procedure is?

1st, Welcome to TBN.

2nd, since I have a TC40D too, thanks for reminding me I have a cruise control  . I actually had to go out to the tractor (and it's after 11pm right now) with a flashlight to verify it. I've never had a chance to use it so totally forgot about it but just recently I could have used it!

3rd, I can't tell you how to fix it but there are some great people on here with all the books, knowledge and experience that I'm sure will be able to help you out.

I'm glad you decided to put your 1st post here! :)

Thanks for the welcome. From what I read, your not alone. Quite a few people forget they have this feature.
I like the way the hydrostat works. It's a big plus for loader work, but holding down that pedal for any length of time gets old fast.
Since you don't use your cruise much, can I have your magnet? :)

Disconnect the magnet harness. The bkt. the magnet is mounted on is secured by two M8 bolts (13mm head). Remove those bolts and pull entire assembly from under the deck. Once you have it out replacement is pretty straight forward. After reinstalling, before you torque the bolts down, slide cardboard, paper or anything about the thickness of a business card between magnet and paddle. Pull the magnet tightly against the card and torque the bolts. Remove the "spacer" material. This will allow the clearance the magnet/paddle need.

Just to add to Wrenchguy's info, you do not have to start the engine to check out the working cruise control. Just turn the key switch ON, depress the forward pedal, and press the cruise switch. You should see a solid green light and the magnet should energize, holding the pedal in place. You don't need the noisy engine running in the background.;)

Also, make sure your brake pedals are released. If both brake pedals are set (like with the parking brake ON) cruise will not stay energized. Sometimes the brake pedal switch can move out of alignment and cause cruise to fail, but if you measured voltage to the magnet, the brakes are not your problem.

Thank you all for your replies.
I can just about reach one hand up, and over the pedal assembly and touch the magnet. I figured that maybe the deck needed to be removed, to access the bolts. I'm unable to crawl under at this time, to take another look, but as soon as I am able I'll feel around for the bolts. I can't imagine being able to gap this thing from underneath the machine.
By the way jinman, I read your procedure for testing the cruise system in another post. That's how I was able to get this far. It appears that everything else is working the way it should. I can read voltage, with a probe at the magnet plug in, but I am unable to unplug the magnet with one hand. It is possible that there is a bad connection at that point. If I'm able to unplug the harness at that point I'll apply 12VDC to the magnet. I was kinda hoping for an access door under the mat.:D

You're correct about not having much room to work but it can be done without removing anything other than what I listed. I can replace the magnet in less than 10 min. but I've had lots of experience. :D

Go to the link and look under the Transmission section and go to the sub-section for the HST pedals. You need to remove bolts (#27) to remove magnet and bkt. (#25)

Jim is better at posting pics of these drawings in the threads. :)

Thank you wrenchguy. Not much room to work is an understatement. Ever think about changing your name to Harry Houdini?:D You say that you have had lots of experience changing these. Do they burn out often?
This machine belongs to my neighbor. It has about 200hrs. on the clock. I don't know at what point the cruise stopped working. It's my intention to buy the tractor. I passed up a newer gear machine for less money. Now I'm wondering if the hydro is worth it. I have read other posts, about the need to use NH filters for the Hydro drive, because of aftermarket units blowing out due to high pressure inherent in the system. I like the idea of the hydro, but I don't want something I'm fixing all the time ether.
Any of you guys wish you bought the 12spd?

Not me. Had my tractor for 6 years and still love it. Minor problems, mostly of my own making (mice in wiring).

Great folks here who know how to fix these tractors when things do go wrong.

I have had a TC29D for 6 years now, and love it. For my use, I would have to go much slower when mowing if I had a gear tractor, I can continuously adjust my ground speed to the conditions. Also the thing for FEL work. However, I have never had a gear tractor, so I can't really compare them.
