It's time to upgrade a bit from my '99 1920. I have nothing against going used again, but I can't find anything close to what I want within two hours of home. The best option for its replacement is looking like a new TC40A. That keeps me in roughly the same size and weight for trailering, with more PTO hp, and I can stay with the 12x12 SSS that I like on my 1920. The closest NH dealer is pricing it at 21,750 with MFD, 16LA loader, and loaded R1's. This is the same dealer where I bought my 1920, and they are offering 2,500 more on my trade than anyone else I've talked to.

Comments on pricing, anyone? The dealer I talked to strongly recommended going with the TC40 over the TC35, which seems reasonable given that the upgrade is only 1,200. Any positive or negative comments on this? I'm in a bit of a hurry on this one, as I have customers waiting and need to get back in business. Will probably sign the papers tomorrow it I don't hear anything too negative.

Here is my quick "take" on your deal. Your dealer is quoting you full MSRP on the TC40A with 16LA loader. That's the $21,750. He's giving you a discount by offering you $2,500 more on your 1920 than anyone else would. So essentially you are getting 11.5% discount on your new purchase price.

In my opinion, since you are a repeat customer, you should be able to get a 15% or greater discount. I'd make an offer of $1,000 to $1,500 less, especially if your 1920 is in good shape.

That's my quick take on this just from the facts you presented in your post. If you could get a quote from another dealer without including the trade-in, it would help in your negotiations too.

Is there a reference available for MSRP? New Holland's website isn't too helpful that way. My only direct comparison is the Case dealer who quoted me a D35 with LX116 loader - their equivalent of a TC35A with a 16LA. His quote was tractor MSRP of 18,471, discounted to 15,200. Loader list is 5,219, discounted to 4,460. Total list price of 23,690, total discounted price of 19,660. NH dealer says price difference of 1,200 between the 35 and the 40. That puts the difference between the Case and the NH less than 1K - is the NH MSRP lower than the Case? Case also offered book value of roughly 9,500 on my trade, sight unseen and dependent on condition, while NH offered 11,750 with it sitting on my trailer in their lot. 1,000 more for the NH than the equivalent Case would be, with 2,250 more for my trade, puts me 1,250 ahead if my math still works. This makes my brain hurt...

May be irrelevant now anyway, as I made the call this afternoon. I'm in trade it quick while it's running mode at this point. I can truthfully say that I have no direct knowlege of a major problem at this point, but I (and my mechanic) have a really bad feeling. The chunk of money I put into engine work last winter, combined with what that work revealed of the abuse by the previous owner, makes any possible problem loom a lot larger. Unfortunately, the only way to confirm my suspicion is to put a couple thousand into a rebuild, or run it till it breaks. Either one could be a very expensive mistake and kill my business for weeks. I got a price on a rebuilt long block that was prohibitively expensive. At this point, coughing up the money for new may be the least dangerous option. I sure hope I'm not getting screwed on the new one, but I'm not exactly bargaining from a position of strength.

Y'all wish me luck...

The state of MN has a website showing their contract on new tractors. It used to show dealer's cost, but they removed that and now it only shows list price. Here's a link to the section you need to check out the TC40A. Scroll down until you see the info you need. It's a bit of a puzzle, but it's eye-opening.

You will need to find the basic tractor (loader ready), add a tire package, and add the 16LA with an additional quick attach plate and HD bucket. The total loader cost is about $3961 the way I calculate it. Once you find the total cost, remember there are incentives to dealers from NH and also adjustments for steel prices that effect final pricing. By looking at this site you will a lot more prepared to talk "turkey" with a dealer.

Got it, thanks. I've heard of that site, but didn't know where to access it. Looking into it now.
